How to shoot video!

Here at 10 we have a resident shooter whom we call Finley.  Scott Finley to be exact.  He is one of favorite camera men to work with.  Here at 10 as well most of us shoot many of our own segments and are learning how to properly shoot video as we go.  Scott and I spent some time at my house shooting my refrigerator. Yes, that's right.  Very exciting.  We go through some tips on how to shoot better video.  We talk lighting, audio and camera shots.  This was actually just an internal video but Laura twisted my arm and legs until I posted it publicly on my blog.  So I hope you learn something and if not, I introduce you to my refrigerator.  :)

Unfortunately, there is no alumni handshake (that I'm aware of). However, I think there should be a Art Institute clan on XBL =)

I think I've mentioned this a few times, before, but yeah, I went to AIS for about 3 1/2 years and recieved two A.A. degrees. One in Animation, Art and Design and the other, Video Production (most of my "Animation" credits transferred over to "Video", so I didn't have to take as many classes to graduate, the second time =)

Since graduating, I've actually worked with some of classmates on some (Independent) video projects and in fact, I'm working with them again, right now, on a new video project.

Having shot a few C9 videos myself, I know what you mean. About half of mine have been exactly as you describe (big window behind subject, lighting messed up) and for the other half it would have been like that but I was more assertive and closed their blinds and/or moved them away from the window

Having filmed a few C9 videos myself, I know what you mean... I've done about half with cruddy lighting and for the rest they would have been cruddy but I made a point of closing the person's windows and/or moving them so that the window was at least to the side... of course, presetting the whitebalance and then switching it to manual would be best, but honestly I hardly ever think of that type of thing when I'm using these little teeny wheeny camcorders

What?! Wait a minute, I don't remember seeing any beer in that fridge! No beer, Tina? Did you hide the beer?

Seriously, I'm a HUGE fan of film and video production and I must say that was an interesting, informative video on...video production.

As an Art Institute of Seattle graduate in Video Production and after watching your video, it certainly took me back to those days of classes. Good times.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your video and I especially liked those "dramatic" shots of you in front of the fridge. Cool lighting, poses, etc =) It was like watching a commercial or a dream, or something.

I liked how "white-balance" and "key-lighting" were handled, as well as editing, but I want more!! More T-Dub!! MORE!!

I hope you continue this "video" series and I would like to suggest some topics that I think would be very helpful for people:

-Composition/framing (very important, imo)

-Camera angles/shots

-Depth of Field

-"f-stop"

-More on lighting (other "types" of lighting/where to place the lights, lighting conditions, etc)

-More on editing (if possible, please show us an editing lab/studio)

and any other video topics/subjects (types of cameras, editing software, etc)

Thanks for posting the video, Tina. Please make more of these.

Speaking of beer, I think I'll have one, right now...

The Channel 9 people should all watch this video ;)

Of course the problem Channel 9 always has is that people's offices have these big windows next to the desks so when the interviewer stands in the doorway the window is always behind the subject and it confuses the camera (messes with the white balance etc.)

Kitchens are just easier to light correctly.

Great video guys! Tina, you're hilarious. Can you give us more info on what camera (model, etc.) was used for this video? Also, where to get a key light? What software you used to edit the video, etc. All the skinny on this production for those that want to get started in producing videos like this?

Intro to Video and Film

Your ability to post segments relevant to what I'm doing is uncanny, Tina.  I'm currently in an intro to Video and Film class, so this is just perfect.  While you covered white balance, it would have been cool to do a quick explanation of the two other video functions in any shot, focus and exposure, but maybe that would have been too much for this segment, after all, you need to have something for next time.

I'm glad Laura made you post this because it was simply brilliant and would have been a shame if no one outside the 10 team saw it.  I'm really glad Scott Finley made this segment with you because it was very insightful and worked out beautifully.  This is definitely the best, if not one of the best segments you've ever done, even if it is trivial compared to the environmental, humanitarian, or medical segments you've covered.

...And Finally, thanks for taking us inside your home again.  While we were limited to the Kitchen, I'd like to say you have a beautiful home and an awesome LG refrigerator.  I, too, am weary of stainless steel fridges for fingerprints and grease smudges, but yours looked fine.   Well, better than fine, it looked beautiful.  The music video wind shots and edited interruptions were gorgeous and remind me of just how beautiful a women you are.  Thanks, Tina. this was fantastic.

Yes I know.  And yes, Laura's is well, let's just say not as clean.  I always get afraid when I eat over there.  Things start growing on her pretzels and stuff.  :)  And once I thought I was eating bean dip, but it was actually cat food in some tupperware.  Not good times.

Yeah, YouTube is the greatest thing. I love these types of "making of" "how to" videos. I'm a person who watches the DVD special features first.

I personally thought this was a great video.  With more and more people wanted to do video blogs and the like and access to easier video publishing more and more (YouTube, Soapbox, etc), education on how to shoot video can be very helpful to a lot of people!
