(Essentially the device unifies the best of iPod and PSP with some sweet creamy MS filling, while not supporting 'Live Anywhere' 360 'Live Spaces' or Soapbox, that we know of so far. Does it even have a microphone for on the fly dictation? [A make or break for me once i get by the price hurdle.])

And of course most of my knowledge is as the result of enrichment from on10.net .

K, meanwhile,

Here's my theory..

Zune = Unabashed iPod ripoff (there is no two-ways about it), but this is the first generation and so future generations of the device will depend on the success this side of christmas 2006-07 as well as its integration with other Community Services offered by Microsoft.

Butt loads of storage space right?
And video support right?
And crappy screen.. (say right)

But why no Video Capture and Video Sharing? (Amoung several seemingly critical ommisions, not the least of which is GPS, and the needed USB port for peripherals, such as a Camera peripheral.)

I'm just thinking, as usual, out loud, about the short sightedness of Microsoft.

Why not include a Zune Eye* (Self powered. secondary power if the main batteries are running low) so that people can take Video and Share video? 30 gigs added to a pocketable Video Camera peripheral would make Zune stand alone amoung device like Cellphones (the main Zune competition on a feature level.) and Uniquely powerful for people looking to get away from their tethered webcams, without having to buy a standalone Digital Video camera and worry about retuning to a computer for video editing.

(*A USB Third Eye type Zune peripheral that allows you to capture and store Video and Pictures directly to your Zune haddrive, if it can do so over the limited wifi bandwidth of the device then it could possibly operate wirelessly.)(the parrot on your shoulder.)

I mean +49$(corded)-89(wireless)$ for a USB pocketable fullcolour micro camera (that can be picked up by 360 and PC as well) to be able to take pictures and videos for your Zune 'right then and there' 'on the spot' ready for sharing with other nearby Zune units or sync them to you Xbox 360 or sent online to SoapBox, may actually seem invaluable if you capture moments that are personally meaningful or even newsworthy. With 360 and Live Anywhere you can then share those videos also through Lives Spaces and your 360 online friends list. INSTANTLY, which again goes so far in justifying the investment if it gets you that noteriety of capturing something incredible on video and being the first to share it with the rest of the online community.

think: Youtube Mobile. Owned and operated by MS and its massive communities (the glue to bind them with User uploaded video, with an added Zune logo watermark so you know where the video came from. With a plethora of connected devices, services, and platforms to share that content MS could easily position Zune as the top of the market digital media device.

Furthermore with the ability to store and share those videos between devices wirelessly, and with the ability to manage to whom and from who you receive and send videos** through Live Anywhere contacts: XBL friends lists, uploads to SoapBox, and things/services of the like), it becomes far easier to justify the cost of the basic Zune device and corded camera peripheral (although I doubt the current design philosophy would allow for an attached camera, it may have to wait for generation 2 devices that have USB ports for peripherals, (full qwerty keyboards etc).

**As well as the standard music sharing, sharing 'audio clips' recorded by Zune (through a mic) and pictures taken through a Zune Eye type camera peripheral.

<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/10343/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Because the device itself is deceptively feature filled there are some things I've noticed that MS is missing.
Zune ? I doubt I will get one, I prefer the devices that have plenty of different codecs supported. Still good to see a new gorilla on the field, gives pressure to the others to make their devices better and cheaper. I also feel Zune has too much DRM stuff in it. And in the long run the ones with rigid DRM will fail :) Industry loves this crap, consumers hate it and there are more consumers than industry as potential buyers.

If the price is right the whole DRM crap goes to hell anyway. 2 $ for a music album and everybody buys it. 4 $ movie and everybody buys it. It's soo easy.... But if they big corps think only 20% profit a year make it they will have to realize this won't work in the long run ;-)

<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/7121/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Would it be possible to offer a 3GP download ? I liked some of the camera shots of Laura filming. That camera looked a little bulky. What was Laura's logic for switching between desaturated (b&w) and color shots? Never use in camera effects! All that is done in the editing process.

Anyway, How does the Zune compare to the iPod in size? I haven't really looked into the Zune because it doesn't do any of the cool things we were promised it could do just yet. Can you manage media through an established software or do you have to install Zune software? Does it work like a portable hard drive? Will it eventually sync to the Xbox 360 and allow us to transfer files? There seems to be an endless list of things the Zune just can't do yet. If I get one, it will be used as a portable hard drive and media player. I'm looking for something I can sync to my 360 and Mac...somehow I doubt the Zune will ever live up to our demands.
<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/7099/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>This was a great segment, Duncan.
