I also have a few questions:

Does the tablet support a downloaded curriculum? Can they be quickly linked to transfer prepared information? That could save sooooo much class time!

Can the laptops be taken home at night? It would be wonderful for parents to be able to view their child's work (or play?) each day...what a way to truly connect!

What kind of security measures are built into this system?

Will this be affordable so that all students will eventually have access?

We are using Acer TravelMate 312 tablets. They are great!

Have you tried it yet? I read books on my Tablet all the time. And not that I am an Acer fan, but the display on the 310 Acer is beautiful.
And WHY would writing on a tablet be any slower than writing on paper, a chalkboard, a sidewalk?...

Great use of GoBinder in math class! I now have a serious case of technology envy. Last year five teachers, one each in each grade 1-5 received a tablet from HP's Technology for Teaching grant. We used them to teach science. Are your science teachers using the tablets to teach? If so, how? My fifth grade students kept a science journal using the Journal program that came with the tablet and just loved doing so. The impact on our science scores was measurable. Even our first graders used the classroom tablet to create science diagrams. Do you plan to use tablets eventually in grades lower than 5th?

What type of training did teachers receive in how to integrate the tablet into their curriculum? It seems that most training out there is focused on skills, not integration. Finally, are students using the tablets for cross curriculum projects? If so, what do these look like?

Was just trying to figure out who manufactured these tablets. The insignia looks like it could be dell or compaq...but then the compaq writing should have been more obvious. Can anyone give me a headsup? Just really curious

6. The role of the teacher to hold students accountable for their work doesn't change in a laptop classroom. The ease of wireless internet access creates a few challenges, and IM are things that teachers must set clear boundaries around and monitor.

7. Cantu, the featured math teacher, starts each 5th math period "collecting" her students howework by email. She uses her tablet to grade the work and resends it back to the students. The GoBinder product that I mentioned makes the management of this process from both teacher and student perspective easier. Quizzes work the same way.

I have a freind who does this same sort of technology enabling in some of the poorest parts of the world.

My theory is...there is a digital divide and those of us on the technical and wealthier side of the divide have a choice to make with how we use the gifts we have and help close the divide and raise everyone up.

It's true their childhood sets the stage for the rest of their lives, but what you're saying they learn is not done on purpose and the child can choose to take it that way or take it in a positive light that they got a great opportunity and when they're successful in the future, they can take their success and give it back to help even more kids get the same opportunities they did. Like mano talked about it...technology in schools will be a long and slow process, but we'll get there.

Besides, I think you'll find that if you polled all "successful" people in the world, I don't think all of them have had great opportunities as kids.

Yeah it's weird for some reason the videos no longer stream on FF 1.5 but they do on IE 7 Beta. I even reinstalled FF 1.5.

If I had this when I was in the 5th grade I'd be the one trying to find a way to put games on it! :) Then again when I was in the 5th grade the only cool games back then were Atari games. :(

I, like you, went to school in Europe. I moved the US when I was 26. I think that's what's jading my opinion here, and I admit, I did not go into a lot of detail in my statement, it was a kneejerk reaction. I just have a very difficult time with schools demanding an expensive 'toy' (and face it, educational or not, it's a toy) to even be allowed admittance. I'm a firm believer of equal education for everyone. Starting kids off at such a young age with the idea that as long as you have the money, you can go further/have a better chance of learning things, sets the stage for their entire lives.

They're actually improving laptop screens to make them less dangerous for the eyes, like the shiny glance you have on the screen to make the colors more photorealistic, they took it away cause it played a mayor role in hurting the eyes.

I agree with you on that its slower to write on those tablets then on paper and i dont see why they don't just let them type.
I'm a student in belgium following ICT and when when have to type our courses in a word document then we get more done then when we have to write it down in out books, i think the average person types allot faster then he can write.
