So the picture looks like something out of Star Wars right? Well, if you know me- you know what a HUGE Star Wars fan I am so when I saw this place I knew it was something I had to get on film. I happened to be in the neighborhood (Hawaii) so I stopped by to check out the Mauna Kea Observatory.
The summit of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii hosts the world's largest astronomical observatory, with telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries. The combined light-gathering power of the telescopes on Mauna Kea is fifteen times greater than that of the Palomar telescope in California -- for many years the world's largest -- and sixty times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Do yourself a favor and click around the Mauna Kea website for a while- there is some AMAZING info on there. If you're like me, it will re-ignite that childhood dream of becoming an astronomer! To the stars....and beyond!

Great segment Laura, i love the subject of Astronomy, and have read all the versions of A History of Time, i reckon i could have some major conversions with that scientist (he sounded like he had a slight english accent, was he english?), i have some theories of my own concerning the origins of the universe, but i shall spare you those.

The research of analyzing light is paramount to understanding who we all are by way of Astronomy, light itself will reveal everything to us one day, despite all the beauty we can see, our eyes in their current state are pitifull in the grand scheme of things, therfore we remain reliant on such advances in this field of technology.

Once again, great segment, i learnt some things i did not know before, i am always open to education, as everyone should be. LS;) Maida Vale, London

Hmm...the sound on this video and the Halloween Freebie video seems a lot lower than usual.  I'm at work...even with all the volumes turned all the way up, I can barely hear it over my headphones.
Wow, beautiful segment, Laura!  I envy you and Tina both.  It's been years since I've been to Hawaii, and the two of you have been there less than a year apart.  I'm trying to get a quick TDY there in the Air Force, but almost all the senior ranking folks take priority on a trip like that.

I'm a fairly big astronomy buff so I love to learn about observatories.  I wasn't that familiar with Mauna Kea before, so thanks for giving us an in-depth look at the facility.  It's gorgeous up there above the clouds, a perfect place to conduct deep field observations all year long!  I used to fly challenges around the observatory in the Microsoft Flight Simulator Hawaii expansion pack.   It was one of my favorite destinations.  Sadly, Microsoft no longer produces flight simulator expansion packs and the few from Abacus don't include Mauna Kea Observatory.  The mountain and cinder cone are there, but it's simply a deserted mound. Sad

Thanks for giving us a great look at the observatory.  You are worthy of being a Hawaiian goddess, Laura.  Did you do any surfing while you were there?
You two get to do some really awesome stuff. That photo looks straight out of Total Recall. Actually, more like Planet of the Apes now that I think about it.
I did surf a little when I was on Oahu- but there's no surfing really on the Big Island. The "beaches" are all black volcanic rock.

Was it tough breathing on top of the mountain though?

With rarified air it must have been tough doing an interview outside.

I guess there weren't any 'races' around the telescopes.. Smiley

Also I guess staying for the night to fall to see the sky would have been quite an experience but y'all must have booked it right away.. such a shame.
