Happy Halo Map Pack Day! As of today, Halo 3's formerly $10 set of maps, the Heroic Map Pack, is now free. This add-on lets you add new battle zones to the Halo 3 game. The pack consists of the Rat's Nest, Standoff, and Foundry maps, where players are provided with things like labyrinthine mazes (Rat's Nest) and editable objects that can be used to create a custom battlefield (Foundry). The next series of maps, the Legendary Map Pack, will be available on April 15th for 800 Microsoft Points.

When I first saw the Halo 3 commercial, I thought that it was rendered (how else do you have still explosions?) And even while I had walked past the two Halo 3 dioramas setup in the Microsoft Company store many times, I just didn't put the two together. But as it turns out, the Halo 3 commercial was filmed from a 30'x40' miniature model of a Halo 3 battlefield.

Where are they now? Where are they going? Where is the section with Master Chief? All these questions and more are answered by Taylor Smith, who was involved with all the above.

This year, at the E for All Expo Major League Gaming consumed the largest amount of real estate of any exhibitor. And for very good reason. Not only were they giving away thousands and thousands of dollars, but they were also offering free Halo 3  tips and tricks. Want to learn a little? Or perhaps you can teach somebody? Watch and learn.

One of the great things about working at Microsoft is the internal distribution lists. You start with a group of people who are wicked smart, put them on a distribution list about a product, service, or subject that they are passionate about, and then you apply the manners and decorum that comes from people clearly identified by their real name conversing with fellow co-workers. It's a great thing.

Recently I saw a thread on our Xbox DL with a list of questions about being all you can be in Halo 3 multiplayer. I contacted some of the people who responded and they've allowed us to post their responses, which I've included below. But I suspect many of you could still stomp us, so if you're a Halo 3 serial killer, please include your thoughts about these questions in the comments to help out the sanguinary-challenged.

What are the tricks to being really good in Halo 3 Multiplayer?
Map awareness and aim are the most important factors.

Make a conscious and concerted effort to think about where the weapons are and where the traffic patterns are.

LOOK where people are likely to be instead of where you are going. If the means you’re always running sideways and backwards then so be it.

AIM where people might appear, if you’re heading up a ramp you shouldn’t be aiming at the ramp. Aim chest-level at edge of the doorway at the top of the ramp where someone might appear.

When you see someone on your radar try to picture where they could be on the map. This will help you get them jump on them, or even surprise them with an around-the-corner grendade.

What controller sensitively should I get used to? 10?
Probably no more than 5 for accuracy. Some people like high sensitivity so they can turn and respond to fire quickly, but that just means they suck at map awareness and they’re constantly being surprised.

Against a good player if you get surprised you’re probably already dead, you should focus on getting away instead of trying to win the fight (unless you have rockets or something that kills instantly)… A good player also won’t surprise you with a weapon that’s not appropriate for the range.

What weapons do more damage at the head versus the body?
Battle Rifle, Carbine, Pistol and Snipers are headshot weapons. Those weapons (except the sniper) only kill when the shields are down. For spread shot weapons like the BR it’s better to put the first few shots into the body and then move to the head once the shields are down.

All other weapons should be shot at the body. Rockets should be shot at the feet.

What is the secret to being a good grenadier?
Map awareness and practice, learn what angle you have to assume to get the correct distance for any given throw.

Remember that some grenades bounce and some stick. Ricocheting a frag grenade into an unseen space is very useful. If you’re trying to kill someone you can’t see then throw more than one.

Only throw a grenade at someone that can shoot you if you surprise them or if your gun is useless. Stopping and throwing a grenade halfway through an equal fire fight is a good way to lose the fight.

RETREAT: Get around a corner, and then turn around and use grenades to spam your escape route. A lot of players will pursue around corners to finish the kill, and get blown up.

How do you use the battle rifle successfully?
Body Body Body, Head. Always be strafing, and use your strafing to make minute adjustments to your aim.

What weapons work well dual wielded?
Dual wieldable ones. Double maulers are ridiculous for camping closed spaces with lots of blind corners. Narrows is a good dual mauler map.

How do you use vehicles effectively?
Practice.

What is the best way to melee from front?
Learn effectiveness range and melee first.

How exactly does EXP increase?
If you are in the top 49% of any hopper game, ranked or unranked, you will get XP. If there are 16 people you just need to be number 8 or higher.

How do you gain EXP the fastest?
Play in all the hoppers, ranked and unranked. Even unranked hoppers have an invisible “skill” to keep you from picking on newbs. If you spread out your gaming you can get XP from the lower levels of all hoppers.

On Solo Slayer, is it based on getting in top X place?
Top 49%

Does Ranked VS Matchmaking make any difference in gaining EXP?
No, but at the higher officer levels you need to have corresponding skill levels to “rank” up. Otherwise you could have a 2000 XP, but since you’re below 10 in highest skill you might be some lieutenant still or something.

What are the tricks to being really good in Halo 3 Multiplayer?
Always keep your weapon reloaded. Stick with your team. Crouching.

What controller sensitively should I get used to? 10?
Depends on the player

What weapons do more damage at the head versus the body?
All weapons

What is the secret to being a good grenadier?
Throw grenades when you see people, and when u die. Learn how to stick people.

How do you use the battle rifle successfully?
Keep your distance and zoom and shoot at the head.

What weapons work well dual wielded?
Weapons in halo 2

How do you use vehicles effectively?
Run over people. :)

What is the best way to melee from front?
Shoot first than melee.

How exactly does EXP increase?
You place 3rd in individual or your team wins.

How do you gain EXP the fastest?
Play with good players and let them carry you. :)

On Team Slayer (and other team games), it is based only on team wins?
yes

On Solo Slayer, is it based on getting in top X place?
Top 3

Does Ranked VS Matchmaking make any difference in gaining EXP?
no

When thinking about map awareness:

  • Keep the opposing team in front of you.
  • Don’t let them flank you from the sides or sneak up behind you.
  • On the flip side, spend your time trying to flank/sneak up behind them. Surprising someone from behind is the easiest way to kill them.

Practice driving the vehicles on custom games. For the warthog, pay careful attention to how you can use the emergency brake to tighten your turn radius.

  • When driving the warthog in combat situation, NEVER STOP.
  • Think about driving from one area of cover to another area of cover, letting your gunner mow down whatever he can during the time you’re exposed between the two areas of cover.
  • Once you get to the 2nd area of cover, pause by circling around for a bit to let shields recharge, then go back.
  • Don’t go through the same path enough times that your opponent will get wise to you & lay down a mine or be ready to stick you.
  • Think defensive. Spend more time worried about keeping yourself alive than killing other stuff. The killing will take care of itself.
  • Beware the overcharged plasma pistol / power drainer.
  • If you hear the missile lock-on noise, it’s time to get something between you and the missiles immediately. Don’t try to sweat it out, it won’t work.

Setup custom game types of SWAT to force you to focus on practicing headshots. Headshots are the most efficient way to take down an enemy, both in terms of the amount of time it takes to take them down, and in the amount of ammo you use to do it (assuming you don’t soften them up first with a grenade or something).

From: Chris Roupp, Software Development Engineer II

Another warthog driving trick: If you are punishing a simi-fixed target do figure 8’s or a tight dog track back and forth to keep the gunner at a good angle. The gun can pan just as fast as the hog can fishtail so keep the turning radius really tight by using the rear brake and never letting off the gas. If someone throws something in your path (grenade, trip mine, small child) it’s really easy to just abandon that leg of the figure 8 and drive away.

Work in teams, practice in teams, and make sure everyone in the team has read this.

The launch of Halo 3 clearly was the biggest thing in entertainment history since sliced bread. Was sliced bread entertaining? Anyway, our Xbox community team (you probably know them from the GamerScore Blog-Casts) decided to reach out into the sea of Halo fans and pluck out a few choice members for the opportunity of a lifetime. Well before Halo 3 hit the masses...these folks hit Halo 3. Watch and see how dreams really do come true.

It's Friday so it's time to check in with my boys from The GamerScore Blog. This week we reflected on what is now known as the biggest launch in entertainment history: Halo 3. On top of that we threw out some Tokyo Game Show goodness and took a look at what we have coming out on the horizon. Oh- and we also introduced Nelson Rodriguez to the cast and if I do say so myself, he's pretty darn amusing :)

I couldn't NOT go to the launch event for Halo 3 right here in Bellevue, Washington at our nearby Best Buy. Honestly, I was overwhelmed. There were hundreds of screaming Halo fans, free stuff, food, music, and PLENTY of Gamer Fuel. On top of all that excitement I got to talk to legendary football quarterback Warren Moon, Bungie community leader Brian Jarrard, Microsoft's global marketing Maestro Jeff Bell - and the man himself Bill Gates even came out to run the register on the first copy Halo 3 sold there. Plus, I got to mess with fanboys! Good Times!

A friend called to ask what it's like working at Microsoft on the Halo 3 launch day. Yes, were all talking about it. Many are playing it right now (both here and at home). Employees were lined up at the company store (they had someone in a Master Chief costume there.) The reviews so far are about as good as game scores get. But best of all, we're all in awe of how much people really love this game.

In what is probably the best (okay, only) statue hack I've ever seen, MIT students 'hacked' the John P. Harvard statue in Harvard Yard to look like Master Chief. You have to believe that in this day and age that there was a video shot of this prank in progress. Come'on, let's see it.

Microsoft employee Brandon Wirtz combined his two favorite games and created a Halo-themed hardwood Dance Dance Revolution surface for his Xbox using about $45 in Home Depot supplies. Check out more details and the video here.

LoadingReadyRun.com shows us their take on the future of the Halo franchise. Little do they know the J. Allard Presidential Planning Committee has already selected a chairperson. ;)

Boy band Team Tiger Awesome puts their Halo love into verse. College Humor demonstrates the importance of sound designers in gaming. Others have taken a break from the carnage to play a little bit of Spartan Stickball. We've even found that Halo can bring out the best in people.

Now go have some fun!

In case there is any question that Halo 3 fans are absolute fanatics, I give you BillyBob884's Halo 3 Master Chief paper model. The 13" tall iconic warrior consists of 2100+ faces and took almost a month to build.

Instructions and a PDF of the pieces are available for download, should you want to spend a month putting your own together... or you could just go play the game, because the only way I'm building one of these is if my power goes out today.

With less than 12 hours since the launch of Halo 3 there are already nearly 200 million gamers killed in action. If you're stuck at work while all your friends are tearing it up in a Warthog, you can always keep track of the fun through Bungie Online. As I sit here at my desk and write this, there are 105,221 119,521 (lucky) people playing Halo 3 online, which makes me wonder how many of them have called in sick to work or skipped school. You can see a real-time world map of the people playing online, while the majority of people playing right now are on the East Coast, you can see there are also some Master Chiefs in places like Abu Dhabi and Shanghai (go to bed already!) At Bungie Online you can also look at screenshots, download video clips or maps to your Xbox,

The highly anticipated Halo 3 release happens Monday at midnight. Here are a few cool Halo 3 links to get you more excited (if that is even possible) until you can play the blockbuster game:
[Update: Too many good links to stop at 10]

  1. First of all, if you haven't checked out the Halo 3 site, stop what you are doing, and go see it. Right now! The site, using Silverlight technology, is so cool that you don't even have to be a rabid Halo fanboy to appreciate it. Here, you can take a 360 degree tour of the Halo 3 world, taking custom screenshots along the way. The screenshots can then be used as wallpaper, posted to your blog or website.
  2. If you're an XBox Live Silver member, visit the Best Buy website, where they are offering 3 days of free online gameplay using XBox Live Gold. You also might win a Pontiac G6 GXP with a custom Halo 3 paint job.
  3. Get some sweet Halo 3 action figures.
  4. Visit the Windows Mobile website to pick up some free Halo ringtones and wallpapers for your phone.
  5. Get a Halo 3 edition Zune. Besides having killer custom graphics & packaging, the Halo 3 Zune comes loaded with music, artwork, trailers, and videos from Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3 as well as an exclusive episode of Red vs. Blue.
  6. Watch a live action short film based on the Halo franchise over on MSN.
  7. Stock up on Halo 3 Dew to fuel those first few days and nights where you will be calling in...cough..."sick" to work.
  8. XBox 360 Halo Edition. Yeah.
  9. Grab a Halo Covenant replica weapon or laser tag rifle.
  10. Pick up a Halo fan suit for the win (if you have a spare $20k.)
  11. Check out some of the Halo 3 game guide and Halo 3 videos in HD via Silverlight. (thanks, Sean)
  12. See a couple of lucky guys (who try to) drive a real Warthog.
  13. And see an 'unbagging' of the Halo 3 press bag (I want to be press!)

A imagem abaixo ilustra essas funções.

Na parte superior estão os capítulos ou cenas do atual clipe. Na parte inferior está a lista de reprodução dos demais clipes de vídeo. Clique aqui para uma versão maior dessa imagem.

Jasman Toys plans to unveil the new Halo replica weapons at Booth #1116 at this year's Comic-Con convention. The weapons are recreations of Halo's Convenant Plasma Rifle and Plasma Pistol. The replicas are made with metal and plastic materials, giving them a heavy presense and an authentic look and feel. Not mere collector items, these weapons are also functional: vibrations, sounds, lights, and recoil allow players to recreate the action of the game in real life. The Plasma Rifle even "overheats" and the heat exchange flanges will pop open on the side. Another feature is "Laser Pursuit" technology, which includes an infrared beam and included target that registers hits on an LCD counter. The Rifle & Pistol will be available in October, soon after the release of Halo 3. A convenant Energy Sword will be released in 2008. Update: See more details and actual pictures on Bungie.net.

The Xbox website has announced a new console that is certain to please the Halo fanboys (and girls!) out there. An Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console will be available in September 2007. The console features a special green and gold finish on both the box and controller. The Halo console comes bundled with a Wireless Controller, 20GB Hard Drive, Headset, Play & Charge Kit, and an exclusive Halo 3 Gamer Pics and Halo 3 Theme. It's the perfect console to go along with the September 25th release of the much-anticipated Halo 3. The game will sold separately, so you can choose the edition you would prefer: a $60 standard edition; a $70 for a limited edition that comes with a bonus making-of disc & art book; and a "Legendary" $130 limited edition that comes packaged in a Spartan military helmet case.

Now that the Halo 3 launch date has been announced and the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta is up and running what better was to celebrate than with an introduction to the game by the Red vs Blue team.

We know you're crazy for Halo 3 news, and here it is. The multiplayer Halo 3 beta will debut on Xbox Live, May 16th at 5AM. (Can I call in sick 5 weeks in advance?) How do you get on that beta? Either through the "Rule of Three" promotion or buying a copy of Crackdown for Xbox 360.

This is your chance to get to try new levels, weapons, vehicles, and try out some new game types. Maps shipping with the beta include Snowbound, Hugh Ground, and Valhalla - all new to Halo 3. Try your hand at the new Mongoose ATV, and gun-up with the new and improved Assault Rifle, Brute Spiker, Spike Grenades, and the killer Spartan Laser.

And this is just a taste of what will be in Halo 3!

And if you're just so curious about Halo 3 that you've recently been put on anxiety medication then check out some behind-the-scenes videos at bungie.net or in HD over Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

This video went up a few days ago onto the marketplace, but here it is for those of you that don't have a 360 or just would rather see it on your PC/Zune/iPod/PSP...

Here is the official description (from Major Nelson's post):

"In the second Bungie “Vidoc” we take a long hard look at the ferocious new antagonist for Master Chief, the Brute. Now that a tentative alliance has formed between Humans and Elites, the fighting focus of Halo 3 switches to the monstrous Brutes. These tenacious foes have improved graphically with the advent of the Halo 3 engine and the power of the Xbox 360, but more importantly, their tactics, weapons, vehicles and AI have all followed suit, making the Brutes the worthiest opponents the Chief has ever faced. See how the designers, artists and programmers set about the herculean task of replacing a fan favorite – the mighty Elite – with an unforgettably ferocious adversary. See how Brutes behave in packs and as individuals with brilliant new animation and AI. Take a first look at the new Brute graphics, weapon and armor designs and finally, get the first ever public glimpse at Halo’s legendary Campaign.

Frankie gives you more details at Bungie.net"

And for those of you who notice... yes, this was widescreen and yes I cropped it down, but this actually made the in-game footage fill the screen (it was 4:3 in the original video) so I thought it was a better overall result :)

And if you really want the highest quality... you can grab the 6Mbps original as well, 640x360
