We wanted to let you know that most of the Channel 10 team is here in Paris helping Channel 8 cover Imagine Cup 2008. Nic is here with Max and I, Benjamin Gauthey is here as a photography judge, and our own Laura Foy is the captain of the short film category. Even Channel 9's own Charles Torre is here as a software judge. And poor Tina? Well, someone had to stay back and answer the phones. (cue violins)

Imagine Cup 2008 - Auf nach Paris!

Ich habe mit Henrike Röse, Academic Event Manager bei Microsoft über den Imagine Cup gesprochen. Der Imagine Cup ist der weltweit größte Technologiewettbewerb für Schüler und Studierende ab 16 Jahren. Microsoft richtet diesen Wettbewerb bereits zum 6. Mal in Folge aus und jährlich werden es mehr Teilnehmer die ihren Ideen und ihrer Kreativität freien Lauf lassen und ihre Projekte in einer der 9 Kategorien einreichen.

Neben internationalem Networking (im vergangenen Jahr waren rund 100 Nationen aus der ganzen Welt vertreten!) gibt es wertvolle Sach- und Geldpreise in Höhe von bis zu 15.000 US$ und eine Reise zum weltweiten Finale im Juli nach Paris zu gewinnen!

Es gibt sowohl technologische Kategorien wie Software Design und Game Development aber auch Design-Kategorien wie Kurzfilm, Fotografie oder Interface Design.

Der Wettbewerb steht jedes Jahr unter einem Motto: nach den Themen Gesundheit und Bildung in den letzten Jahren lautet das diesjährige Motto: "gesündere Umwelt und besserer Umweltschutz durch Technologie"

Mitmachen kann man jetzt noch in folgenden Kategorien: Fotografie: einfach bis zum 2.Mai 2008 eine Fotoserie von bis zu 10 Bildern zum Thema Umwelt auf deinen Windows live space hochladen !

Oder bei den Sonderawards der Kategorien Software Design und Interface Design teilnehmen.

Im Rahmen einer großen Student Technologie Conference wird im Mai 2008 das Team ausgewählt, das die deutsche Fahne beim internationalen Finale in Paris hochhalten wird!
Du kannst dabei sein wenn die Entscheidung fällt. Es wird Vorträge zu den aktuellen Technologiethemen, Networking und vieles mehr geben; auf der STC 2008!

How To - The creation of an Imagine Cup video

I stopped by Worktank last week in downtown Seattle to check out the making of a really interesting Imagine Cup video. I personally have down the basics of editing but animating, not so much. Rick Wallace is the art director on the project and took some time to chat with us on how he strung the whole video together. From handdrawing the storyboards to creating movement with Adobe After Effects the entire process took him roughly six weeks. I hope you enjoy.

Innovation Day - Signal

Innovation Day wasn’t just a place for well-established researchers and partners to show their technologies. It was also an opportunity for upcoming talent to present their innovative projects. One very interesting project that I saw was Signal. Signal is a sign language teaching environment being developed by four students from the National University of Ireland Maynooth. Their project was the winning entry at the Irish final of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition 2007.

Daniel Kelly and Mark Clerkin were on hand in Brussels to present their interactive sign language teaching environment and Daniel showed me the demo video about the program and explained how it all works.

Deutsche Imagine Cup Gewinner '07 - Ubizoo

Letzte Woche war ich in Hamburg und hatte die Chance mit dem Deutschen Gewinner von dem Imagine Cup '07 zu sprechen. Das Gewinner-Projekt heißt UbiZoo und die Teammitglieder sind Eike Falkenberg, Fatih Keles, Jan Napitupulu und Thomas Schmidt. Die haben den Wettbewerb auf der STC gewonnen und sind im August nach Korea zu dem internationalen Wettbewerb geflogen.

So was ist UbiZoo?

UbiZoo bietet eine technologische Unterstützung für den Zoobesuch einschließlich pädagogischer Vor- und Nachbereitung für Schüler und Lehrer im Rahmen des Naturkundeunterrichts an Grundschulen. Durch die Integration moderner, mobiler Computer wird der Besuch im Zoo zu einem aufregenden Erlebnis für Schüler und Lehrer. Gleichzeitig werden die Kinder motiviert, Wissen spielerisch zu erlangen. IMAGINE CUP BRINGS HOPE TO DEAF

Deaf people don’t have equal opportunities to access education as do others without such a handicap. But there is a hope for them which comes with a new project SilentBooks presented by students from the Czech Republic. Ales Sturala (Andy) and Dominika Sedlaczkova from the Brno University of Technology have decided to take the challenge and compete in the biggest student competition in the world – Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2007. And they have been successful so far. They made it to the finals in Korea with their signing 3D model that provides education for deaf people in sign language instead of classic language. Ales says: “I have been dealing with problems that deaf community has to face for some time now. I’d seen that especially children have a problem to access information when it’s in a written form so I have decided to try to solve it.” Ales is an experienced IC competitor. This is his second time entering finals: “I’d enjoyed it a lot last year. It was great to meet with other students from different countries.” He is happy about his decision to enter the competition despite the fact that he was working on the project for more than half a year almost nonstop: “It was an excellent programming experience for me. I’ve also learnt some new technologies which is great.But this team is not the only hope for the Czech Republic. Imrich Zivcak (Imro) and Lukas Perutka (Lucaso) from the Prague’s Charles University form the Gold Fusion Team and they are going to fight in Hoshimi Programming Battle. These two former roommates have heard about the competition for the first time two years ago and at the beginning were hesitating to enter. At the end they did and this decision brought them to the finals in Korea at the end. Even though that waiting for the results was for them according to Lukas nerve breaking experience they don’t regret it. Imrich is happy about entering the competition not only for the fact that they’ve made it to the finals: “It enabled us to verify our programming abilities.” Both teams believe that they’ll succeed in Korea. Imrich and Lukas had the opportunity to compare their knowledge to that of their competitors already: “We have met with other finalists during semifinals and ended up second then”. Their main concern seems to be safe flight over to Korea. Apart from that they are all excited about getting to know this country, its culture and cuisine. No matter of what is going to happen in Korea, these students know what they want to do with their lives. Ales is moving to Netherlands in September where he is going to study for one year and he hopes that his project will draw interest of some business company which will help with development and distribution of the SilentBooks:” This project hasn’t been created only because of this competition. Its main aim is to help deaf people.” Imrich and Lukas have to get back to their studies soon after the end of the Imagine Cup. They hope that their participation in this event will help them to find a good job later on.

Comme chaque année, Microsoft organise un concours mondial à destination des étudiants appelé Imagine Cup. Celui-ci se découpe en différentes catégories :

En début d'année (scolaire), les mines de Nancy, en partenariat avec Microsoft, ont organisé un Boot Camp pour ses étudiants autour de la catégorie Project Hoshimi. Cette catégorie permet à toute personne de 7 à 77 ans de s'initier à la programmation sans douleur. Nous avons donc passé 2 jours aux côtés des étudiants des mines pour les aider à appréhender cette catégorie absolument fantastique dans laquelle, vous allez donner vie à des nano-robots au travers d'un environnement 3D afin de sauver un professeur malade. L'histoire continue au travers de cette vidéo...

Imagine Cup 2006. Behind the scenes of the Short Film Competition

This year, the finals for the Imagine Cup brought student competitors from 180 countries all over the world to India to compete in 6 different categories. I focused my attention on the short film competition. There were six teams: Canada, Poland, Taiwan (China), Turkey, USA (Lansing) and USA (Echo).

The Short Film Invitational highlights the art and science of telling a story. Students are challenged to share a perspective on the theme of the Imagine Cup but moreover they are asked to express themselves in a unique medium that still challenges even the most veteran of filmmakers. From concept and storyboard, to footage and editing, these participants must be able to put it all together and move an audience. Unique perspectives and creativity abound in this process but the story must still come through the digital media and have a strong purpose and meaning. Only the most talented young filmmakers will even attempt such a feat.

I followed the Canadian team for 3 days while they worked, slept, ate, conquered problems and created magic. Take a look at my journey with Team Canada.

Also, the event itself garnered tons of media attention and it promises to be even bigger next year! Register now for next year and be a part of history.
