Innovation Day - PLANETS

Auf Innovation Day in Brüssel habe ich mit Wolfgang Keber von DIaLOGIKa über PLANETS gesprochen. PLANETS bedeutet “Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services” und es ist ein EU-Forschungsprojekt, das um die Langzeitarchivierung vom elektronischen Datum geht. Das PLANETS Projekt vereint nationale Bibliotheken, Archive, Universitäten, Forschungsinstitute und Technologie-Unternehmen, um die Probleme und Anforderungen der Langzeitarchivierung abzuschätzen und geeignete Tools und Strategien zur Archivierung zu entwickeln.

DIaLOGIKa arbeitet mit Microsoft Research in Cambridge zusammen, um geeignete Tools zur Konvertierung zwischen Office-Formaten zu identifizieren und sie in das PLANETS Interoperability Framework zu integrieren.

Innovation Day - Big Board

At Innovation Day in Brussels, Phil Gosset from Microsoft Research in Cambridge showed me Big Board, which is a project they have developed with the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Big Board is an easy way for people to download information for free. How does it work? Basically there is a board somewhere that has images on it. All you need is a standard camera phone with Bluetooth and you can take a photo of whatever interests you. You then send the photo via Bluetooth to the board. The board detects which image was sent and then sends back the information related to this image. The board can send information such as video, audio or text files without using the network. It is a great solution for a country like South Africa where camera phones are fairly common, but people may not have the money or credits to send information via the mobile network.

Innovation Day - CrimeSceneNet

A couple weeks ago at Innovation Day in Brussels I spoke with Rasmus Bodeholt about CrimeSceneNet. CrimeSceneNet is an application developed by Imasoft ApS, a Danish software development company that specializes in software to assist the work of police, prosecutors and crime scene investigators worldwide. The software allows for the documentation of all aspects of a crime scene and has options for displaying photos, documents, videos, audios, leads and evidence. Watch out criminals! The authorities are now going to be better prepared to solve and prosecute crimes.

Innovation Day - Xbox Family Settings

Qumar Jamil, Xbox Platform Program Manager, introduced me at Innovation Day to an important feature in Xbox 360 called the Family Settings. The Family Settings allow parents to regulate the games their kids play as well as their Xbox Live interactions. The Xbox team just released an update that enhances the Family Settings with the Family Timer. The Family Timer lets you manage console use on a daily or weekly basis. For example you can set the console to allow 2 hours of play per day. After those 2 hours of play, the console can't be used again within that 24-hour period, unless you grant additional time. Of course if you're the console administrator, you can override Family Timer settings if you want to continue playing games or watching DVD movies after the set time limit is reached.

Innovation Day - Health and Food Management

Don’t like to go to the doctor? Or make shopping lists? I saw two applications at Innovation Day that can help you avoid these things.
Ikerlan was there presenting projects that they created in collaboration with the European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC). The Health Management Application (HMA) monitors and manages health conditions of family members at home. The application tracks body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, ECG and weight and if there is a problem, the data can be sent to a doctor or hospital for evaluation. The Food Management Application suggests menus with recipes and shopping lists suitable for the whole family including consideration for any dietary needs as well as the quantity and expiration dates of the food on hand. Natividad Herrasti showed me both applications and explained how it all works together to make our lives easier.

Innovation Day - HomeFX Recommender

Am 4. Dezember war ich im Brüssel für EU Innovation Day. Auf der Veranstaltung habe ich mit Ron Mevissen, Software Design Engineer von dem European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC) über Information Overload (Informationsflut) und das HomeFX Recommender gesprochen.

Das HomeFX Recommender ist ein Add-in für Vista Media Center, das Empfehlung für Fernsehprogramme macht. Informationsflut wird problematisch. Mit so viele Auswähle, ist es schwierig der Inhalt zu finden, der wir wollen. Das Recommender-System baut ein Profil über Eure Präferenzen und Interessen und benutzt das um Programme und Filme zu empfehlen. Könnte das Leben ein bisschen einfacher machen, oder?!

Innovation Day - Signal

Innovation Day wasn’t just a place for well-established researchers and partners to show their technologies. It was also an opportunity for upcoming talent to present their innovative projects. One very interesting project that I saw was Signal. Signal is a sign language teaching environment being developed by four students from the National University of Ireland Maynooth. Their project was the winning entry at the Irish final of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition 2007.

Daniel Kelly and Mark Clerkin were on hand in Brussels to present their interactive sign language teaching environment and Daniel showed me the demo video about the program and explained how it all works.

Innovation Day - HDView

At Innovation Day in Brussels, I spoke with two very cool guys from MS Research in Redmond, Bryan Ressler and Matt Uyttendaele. They filled me in on HD View and how to create my own HD View images using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

HD View is a new technology developed by Microsoft Research's Interactive Visual Media Group to aid in the display and interaction with very large images. And by very large images, they mean billions of pixels (Gigapixels)! It is a browser plug-in that enables you to pan back and forth or up and down and to zoom in or out to examine an area of interest in the very large images while still maintaining the high resolution details. The new version of Windows Live Photo Gallery has a new image stitching component that allows you to select a group of photos that have some overlap and the result is a panoramic view photo.

Innovation Day - Video Collage

Innovation Day in Brussels was a great opportunity for the research groups at Microsoft to demostrate their innovations and the cool technologies that they have been working on.

At the event, I spoke with Shipeng Li, Principal Researcher, Internet Media Group, Microsoft Research Asia about one of their new innovations the Video Collage. The Video Collage constructs a collage from a video sequence for video browsing. It takes the most representative images in the video and seamlessly arranges them on a canvas while preserving the structure of the video content. It also allows users to browse video content in a variety of different ways. How cool is that?!

Innovation Day - Interactive Whiteboard

Last week I was in Brussels for the 4th EU Innovation Day where government leaders, academic and industry stakeholders, and the media were given a sneak preview of the technologies of tomorrow.
The event showcased many exciting technologies from the consumer perspective from newly developed prototypes in their early development stage to technologies of the future.

While the event is an important policy forum to exchange ideas and have an open debate, I have to admit that I was there to check out the cool technologies of today and tomorrow. I took my video camera with me and taped many exciting demos. Unfortunately, I had a bit of bad luck that day and the audio on the camera wasn't set properly. I have tried to clean up the sound the best I could, but unfortunately it isn't as good as I had hoped. However, the demos are so interesting that I figured it was still worthwhile to post them.

A handful of partners that collaborate with Microsoft were on hand at the Innovation Day to demo their products. One of those partners was SMART Technologies Inc. I spoke with Rahim Habib, International Channel Manager, and he showed me their interactive whiteboard that has a large, touch-controlled screen that works with a projector and a computer. The projector displays the computer's desktop image onto the interactive whiteboard that acts as both a monitor and an input device. Users can write on the interactive whiteboard with “digital ink” or use their fingers to control the computer.
