Map the Chinese Earthquakes

No doubt you've heard about the recent earthquakes in China. The Live Search Maps team in China has put together a collection rendering all of the earthquakes in China. In addition to mapping out where the earthquakes occurred, there's a sidebar which provides more information about each spot listed in the collection. This could be really useful for those tracking what's going on in the various affected regions. Too bad it's only in Chinese, though, I would love to have a translated version of this. New Features in Live Search Maps

The folks over on LiveSide have announced some coming changes to the popular online mapping service, Live Search Maps. To begin, the two search boxes have been combined into one box and moved over to the left with the links to search Businesses, People, Collections, and Locations below it. The links to the Welcome page, Directions, Collections, Notes, Share, and PrintAs have moved as well, now over towards the top-right side of the page. These moves give more room to the map itself as the header is no longer getting in the way.

Another major improvement that I am really looking forward to is the new ability to compress either the beginning or end of a set of driving directions. For example, although I need to make 4 turns to get on the highway from my house, I do not need those turns spelled out for me when I'm getting directions from point A to point B. This feature will let me condense that into one step as opposed to showing turn-by-turn directions for each of those steps. Not only does this make the directions easier to read at a glance while driving, it has the added "green" benefit of conserving paper.

Next up is the "1-click directions" feature. If you are providing directions to others when you are hosting an event, the attendees will be coming from multiple starting points. The 1-click directions feature will show directions to the endpoint from the North, South, East, and West. These major routes are shown as well as alternative routes coming from the same direction, if there are multiple ways to arrive. Another good use of this feature is providing directions to your customers to help them locate your business.

Finally, other improvements include the ability to re-route directions to miss bad traffic, icons to the left of the driving directions showing arrows and other symbols for turns and start/endpoints, and bolded text for the turns and street names, making the directions much easier to follow when you're in traffic.

Durante coletiva de imprensa da manhã de hoje, a Microsoft anunciou que os serviços de busca de mapas no Brasil serão atualizados para incluir detalhes de mais de 1.000 cidades do país. Além disso, o Live Search Maps permitirá traçar rotas e ver o trânsito em 170 dessas cidades, graças a uma parceria com a Companhia de Engenharia e Tráfego de São Paulo, a CET. O trânsito será atualizado a cada 15 minutos entre os horários de 6h e 21h. Essa atualização dos mapas é fruto de uma parceria entre a Microsoft e a MapLink.

Mostrando o real potencial da ferramenta, o Live Search Maps também utilizará informações da TeleLista para integrar informações de serviços e estabelecimentos. O usuário que planejar uma viagem, por exemplo, poderá encontrar restaurantes, hotéis, bancos e demais serviços ao longo de seu caminho.

Durante a coletiva também foi anunciada a entrada do Live Seacrh Products no Brasil. Esse é um serviço que compara preços e características de produtos para o usuário. Para esse serviço foi fechada uma parceria com o Buscapé, tradicional site brasileiro de comparação de preços.

Catherine Heller sits down with Chris Pendleton, he's the virtual earth technical evangelist here at Microsoft who talks about Live Search Maps. It's an integration of local listings for finding places of business, internet based search. It's got an integrated 3D browser. There is so much to Live Search Maps that tomorrow we will be bringing you the second half of this demo which is all about the integration of Live Search Maps.

Live Search Maps - Updated Imagery

The Live Search Maps team has expanded the area of aerial and bird's eye imagery in cities across the globe. The detail is great, don't forget to use F-11 to go fullscreen and arrow keys to navigate (unless you have a wired Xbox 360 controller.)

The areas with enhanced coverage include:

- States of Indiana and Hawaii, Malibu, Joiliet, Miramar, San Francisco, Aurora, La Jolla, Naperville, Niagara Falls, Beaverton, La Mesa, Brooklyn, Portland, Indianapolis, Newark, Roseville, Columbus, Dallas Ft. Worth, Imperial, Juneau, Fairbanks

Italy - Aerial and Birds eye coverage was already very good here. 73 new cities now have 15cm resolution aerial coverage

Geeks on Peaks: Mt. Logan and Live Search Maps

As the Canadian guy on the on10 team I'm excited to have on10 as part of this great expedition happening right here in Canada. Larry has a great video interview with James Coleridge talking about the upcoming expedition to Mt. Logan and the technology that they will be using.
