First Look: SecondLight

It's hard to top Microsoft Surface, but the brains at Microsoft Research (with help from MS Hardware) certainly did with SecondLight. SecondLight is a variation on the Microsoft Surface computer, the twist is that it can actually project a second image through the first image, which can land on a sheet of paper, a plastic sheet, or anything else semi-transparent that you want to use as a make shift secondary (or third, fourth, fifth) display. Those displays can also have their own multitouch capabilities in the air.

So what does this mean? It means a doctor can use a sheet of paper to dynamically 'cut through' a 3D MRI, or you could even scoop up windows on a surface computer and then interact with them on this lightweight display without altering the original Surface image. We just showed SecondLight at the MSR keynote but last night I got a few minutes with Steve Hodges, Alex Butler, and Shahram Izadi from the SecondLight team and they walked us through how it works. I apologize for how horrible I sound, I lost my voice the day before. Also, we couldn't turn the lights on so it's a little dark. :)

Surface DJ

Surface DJ is a killer app for Microsoft Surface which lets techo-loving DJs - or even wannabe DJs - work together to create songs using a Mixer-type application. As the DJs move objects into a specific area of the Microsoft Surface screen, different sounds are played. Or maybe I shouldn’t say “sounds,” because sounds alone weren’t enough for this app’s creators. That’s why Vectorform, the company behind the app, added in musical loops, too. Of course, the app is designed to take advantage of the Surface computer’s multi-touch capabilities since it lets multiple DJs work together to build a musical creation at the same time.

Sheratons Get Surface

If you’re in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, or Seattle, then you may want to pop by a Sheraton Hotel. Why? Because those Sheratons have received Microsoft Surface tabletop computers for their lobbies. Hotel guests can use the Surface computers as a virtual concierge by means of an application called “CityTips,” a program which uses Virtual Earth to help guests find nearby restaurants and entertainment venues. The other applications available include “Sheraton Snapshots,” which lets you check out all the other Sheraton hotels worldwide and “The Sounds of Sheraton,” which lets you play music using the Surface as a jukebox.

Hands on with the Rio iBar Microsoft Surface units

Kyle Warnick from the Microsoft Surface team was in Las Vegas yesterday for the launch of the Rio iBar Surface units.
Kyle and team had their video camera with them and filmed this great demo of the new Surface apps in action for Channel 10.
Apart from fun, multiplayer mini-games and informational applications Harrah's have created a unique Surface experience by incorporating video camera's in the ceiling of the bar that allow you to (amongst other things) experiment with social interaction and the ordering of adult beverages,.. what a mix!

Microsoft Surface at the Rio in Las Vegas; Your Virtual Wingman

Harrah’s Entertainment and Microsoft are unveiling a new interactive entertainment experience with the deployment of six Microsoft Surface units at the iBar in Las Vegas’ Rio Hotel and Casino.

Guests in the iBar will be able to play games, order customized drinks for themselves (or that special someone across the room) and send photos and messages to each other via strategically placed video cameras that can be controlled by the Surface units.

The iBar Microsoft Surface units will feature eight brand new interactive applications:

• Flirt Vegas style by adding a hip ultralounge vibe to the flirting experience. This application allows guests to create an exciting new way to chat and meet people from one Surface to another. Strategically placed video cameras at each Surface add even more energy to the action, allowing guests to interact with old friends, flirt with new acquaintances, and take and send photos across the lounge.

• Mixologists are inspired to create and order their own signature cocktails for themselves or to send to that special someone across the room using Surface and Harrah’s intuitive food and beverage application.

• Hip-notic describes how guests will feel when kicking back to find and view the latest and most popular online videos with their friends on Surface.

• Head Games are taken to a whole new level with Harrah’s creative suite of play-for-fun games. With the unique Surface interface, Harrah’s adds an exciting new take on some old favorites such as High Roller bowling, Dissed multiplayer pickup pinball, and a Last Call musical memory game that encourage the whole group to play together. Leaderboards add excitement as guests compete with one another to see who can climb to the top of the scoreboard. In addition to Harrah’s unique applications and play-for-fun games, the Surface units also feature a photos application and a virtual concierge application developed by Microsoft that Harrah’s customized for its environment.

• See and Be Scene is what guests can do as they tour all of Harrah’s Vegas properties and explore attractions in Vegas without leaving their seat at the iBar.

• Virtual Vegas aptly describes how guests will take a virtual walk down the Las Vegas strip on Surface, letting their fingers be the guide. Guests will be able to get information on the latest events and attractions at all Harrah’s properties throughout Vegas.

Surface Demo Apps

The Microsoft Surface team creates sample (or "demo") applications which show off Microsoft's Surface's potential. Eagle-eyed blogger Long Zheng found a great flickr photo set of these demo apps taken by a Microsoft Canada employee, Jean-Luc David, upon his visit to the Redmond campus. The photos include shots of the water-ripple demo, the photo application, Virtual Earth, a game called ScatterPuzzle, a game called Ghosts, a Backgammon game, a music player, plus some amazing interactive visualizations. Microsoft Surface Now in AT&T Stores

On April 17th, Microsoft Surface made its public debut - launching at 5 AT&T stores across the U.S. At the stores, Surface will help customers shop for mobile phones. To use Surface, just put the phone down on the display and an onscreen menu appears showing features, options, tech specs, etc. The table can also be used to get more info about AT&T's various cell phone plans, pricing, and coverage area. Microsoft Surface Coming to AT&T Stores

Beginning with 5 stores on April 17th, Microsoft Surface will finally arrive in public. Five AT&T stores will be the first places to see the new machines up close and personal. Specifically, Surface will arrive at two AT&T stores in New York, one in San Francisco, one in San Antonio, and one in Atlanta. Each store will have a few machines where customers can compare different features of the various handsets AT&T offers.

Who wants to bet those 5 stores are going to be extremely popular on April 17th?
