Mobile health update: Devices and solutions for healthcare professionals-part 1

Among the attributes of information technology solutions designed for healthcare professionals, mobility is high on the list. Doctors, nurses, and other clinicians are always on the move, and the IT solutions they use must move with them. Fortunately, there is now a wide selection of very capable devices and applications to meet the needs of highly mobile medical professionals.

In this special two-part video edition of House Calls for Healthcare Professionals, Dr. Crounse and his guests review some of the options. The first program takes a look at four popular mobile devices running Windows Mobile 6. The second program reviews a useful application from IQMax that provides mobile access to patient lists, lab reports, x-ray results, and more wherever that information is needed. Other useful functions include charge capture and real-time dictation of chart notes, discharge summaries, and documents using a smartphone.

The Lost Tape: Behind The Scenes at CES 2008

Whilst moving from Singapore to the USA last month I stumbled upon a lost MiniDV tape that we shot at CES 2008 back in January,.. lo and behold,.. the tape contained some never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage of the Microsoft CES 2008 booth! Score!

So what does (did?) it take to put together and run the Microsoft CES 2008 booth? 378 two way radios*, 4,201 Xbox 360's*, 57,000 LCD displays*, 3.6 million miles of cable*, two giant robots** and one guy playing Halo 3***.

Microsoft employee, Jeff Weir, created Viscosity - an online abstract art application- and it won the Best Art award at this years SXSW. It's fun, it's beautiful and it's free. An Inconvenient Ride

Earth Day is almost upon us and it's time to ramp up our Green efforts. Microsoft is no exception to that rule- and as such the Live Search team has decided to sponsor An Inconvenient Ride. This is a 23 day long bicyicle journey across the country in order to spread the message about the state of our environment and help alert people as to how they can help. And the kicker is- the bicyclists are all kids! It really is an amazing program- I spoke with the Seattle team (who take off this Sunday March 30) about their mission and found it inspiring to see how much these kids really care. Watch this clip and then get involved!

Congrats to Live Labs' Jeff Weir

Jeff Weir is a UX Designer in Microsoft's Live Labs. Between free alcohol, parties, more alcohol, more parties, and a general lack of sleep, Jeff managed to win the South by Southwest (SXSW) Web Award in the Art category. Jeff's application, Viscosity, is a modern art generator.

Viscosity kind of reminds me of some of Shirley Shor's work that was featured on Celebrity Apprentice last week. While I looked at Shirley's vastly expensive framed LCD panel playing through moving artwork, I thought to myself "Hey, I could make that with an old Tablet PC... well, except for the moving art part." Well, now I think I'll just frame a spare Tablet PC and direct it to Jeff's Viscosity watch page. Very cool. Congrats Jeff.

Microsoft Issues New Product Principles: The Ozzie Effect

Microsoft this morning announced four guiding principles for it's major products, including Vista, Office, and SQL Server. Ensuring open connections, data portability, enhanced support for industry standards, and open engagement with the industry have all been listed as prioritied for current and future versions of the company's products.

As what a few of us here at C10 view as the first major impact of Ray Ozzie taking the helm, we will begin to see increased industry and community engagement from Microsoft; more APIs and documentation will be made available without licensing fees. There is also an Open Source Interoperability Initiative created as part of today's announcement, which is designed to further the conversations between Microsoft and the open source community.

DreamSpark: Students + Free Software = happily ever after

Its a good day to be a student. Well, maybe its always a good day to be a student, but today Microsoft is making it a free day too.

Free you say? Free i say. And its not just chump change either. On the contrary.. how do you feel about Visual Studio 2008? How about a copy of Windows Server 2003. Oh wait.. did i mention the entire Microsoft Expression Studio? aaanddd, drumroll please... the XNA Game Studio 2.0 software and a one year subscription to XNA Game Studio Creator's club?!

Today Microsoft launched DreamSpark in 10 different countries including Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S - and more countries will be added to the list soon. Basically the program allows students to download software for free, just by virtue of their student-ness.

One of the things friends and family often ask about is what it's like to work at Microsoft. Well, the first thing I got used to seeing is the picture at left - not because the mailboxes are small, but because there is just so much email, but who can resist joining every cool discussion list you find? Two other things came out recently that give you a peek inside the world of Microsoft, the first is our teleconferencing system. You call a number and then while you wait for everyone to join, a song is burned into your psyche. In fact, I can hear this song right now like it's playing on my Zune. So many of us here got a big laugh when we saw this video.

The other thing that plays a big part of your role at Microsoft is in how we get things done. We use a system called 'commitments', meaning you define to yourself, your boss, and your co-workers what exactly you're going to take responsibility for. Fast Company has a story that mentions this practice at Microsoft.

Fashion meets Technology at CES 2008

The PC industry is paying more and more attention to the look of their products since we (the people) are more and more asking for stylish, unique PC's to accent our personal styles. Microsoft even had a full runway show to show off their new high fashion coutour PC's. Then- Microsoft asked three fashion industry leaders to pick their favorite PC designs. The three judges were Nigel Barker, top fashion photographer and a judge on the hit TV show, “America’s Next Top Model,” hip-hop trend setter and fashion innovator Tony Shellman and A-list fashion stylist and entrepreneur Misa Hylton. After considering 12 of the most stylish Windows-based PCs to hit the market in the last year, they each chose a favorite.

Microsoft Auto at CES 2008

This was by far the best part of the Bill Gates keynote for me and probably the highlight of the show overall. Microsoft Auto showed of 2 new great technologies to make all of our driving experiences more pleasant with a focus on the Sync My Ride technology. I can't wait to get this in my car. Not only does it offer voice activated features with your wireless MP3 player and your bluetooth mobile phone- but you will be blown away at the excellent text messaging options. Well, at least I was. Take a look and you be the judge.

Zune Social at CES 2008

During the Bill Gates keynote, Robbie Bach announced the Zune launch in Canada* in Spring 2008. The Canadian offering this spring will first include Zune players (including Zune Originals), Zune software and Zune Social, with the Zune Marketplace online store coming later this year. He also showed off some pretty cool functionality between Zunes and Microsoft Auto software with the "Sync My Ride" demo (check back soon for my interview with that team).

But still, after all that Zune love I felt there might be a little bit more. In this clip I chat directly with the Zune team about the new features on Zune marketplace and how much emphasis is being placed on perfecting Zune Online as a social networking site.

Games for Windows at CES 2008

You may have noticed that we haven't shown you much from the Xbox team yet this year from CES- but that doesn't mean Microsoft didn't have a stellar gaming presence. Games for Windows went from two titles announced last year, to 60 this year! In fact, 20% of the games sold for the PC were Games For Windows branded. I stopped by to clear up some confusion Tina was having about what exactly "Games For Windows" means and take a look at their new titles. Also...there's been buzzing on the show floor about a "Secret Game" that they're keeping behind closed doors and under lock and key...so I opened the doors and picked the lock.

Quando a Netflix iniciou suas operações, muitos previam o fim da Blockbuster - a titã no mundo de aluguel de DVDs e antigos VHS. Com um modelo muito amigável para o usuário, a Netflix desde seu princípio utilizou a Internet como parte fundamental de seu negócio. Para quem não conhece como funciona, o usuário Netflix cria uma lista de DVDs na Internet - e só na Internet - para assistir. A Netflix então envia os DVDs pelo correio americano com envelope de retorno já pago. O usuário pode manter o DVD por quanto tempo quiser, sem pagar multa de retorno, e tem direito a ter um número limite de DVDs ao mesmo tempo. Ou seja, com uma mensalidade fixa você vê quantos DVDs tiver tempo hábil para assistir. Quando o usuário quiser devolver o filme, basta deixar em qualquer caixa de correio.

Na Internet a Netflix deu o primeiro tiro, fornecendo aos seus membros alguns títulos para streaming. Eu já testei o sistema (funciona só nos EUA) e realmente é impressionante a qualidade e velocidade de início. Numa conexão "típica" de Internet via TV a cabo nos EUA, 6mbps, eu comecei a assistir meu filme em menos de 15 segundos e a qualidade era igual a DVD - sem exageros. A Netflix até chegou a mostrar sua visão do futuro no Mix '07.

Finalmente a Blockbuster entrou na era de entrega de vídeo via Internet. Numa primeira tentativa de mergulhar nessas águas, ela vai realizar sua primeira transmissão de vídeo streaming via Internet de um filme longa metragem no dia 19 de dezembro. E o filme será gratuito. A Blockbuster vai exibir o filme "Jackass 2.5" até o dia 31 de dezembro utilizando Microsoft Silverlight, a mesma utilizada na demonstração da Netflix no Mix '07. Para quem estiver nos EUA na época, acesse o filme aqui www.blockbuster.jackassworld.com.

Lembrando que usuários de IE, Firefox, e Safari poderão assistir ao filme após instalação do Silverlight plug-in.

Who would have ever thought that Johnny Knoxville and Steve O. would be paving the road to the future? Well, On December 19th, Blockbuster will premiere the first (and did I mention FREE) full-length feature film, Jackass 2.5, directly to online audiences using Microsoft Silverlight. This is one of the largest projects in Blockbuster history and it's all made possible by using the rich media CDN from Limelight Networks and Silverlight. This really shows a shift in how people are choosing to consume their media and it brings a tear of joy to my eye to note that Microsoft is paying attention to that trend. Health Calls with Dr. Bill Crounse: HealthVault

Healthcare is becoming much more consumer focused. Today’s patients want to be more directly involved in their care and in making decisions about their health. In October 2007, Microsoft launched HealthVault, a Web-based environment of new online services to help people search, store, and connect with their health information. HealthVault enables patients to have a copy of their own health information, have control over it, and have the ability to securely store and share their information with whomever they choose.

In this special video edition House Calls, Bill Crounse, M.D. and his guests discuss Microsoft HealthVault and HealthVault Search, the latest tools from Microsoft helping to improve the way people find, organize, and use health information.

Bios:

Peter Neupert is corporate vice president of the Health Solutions Group at Microsoft Corp., where he is responsible for Microsoft’s collaboration with the healthcare system to address global infrastructure issues of significant scale.

Neupert first joined Microsoft in 1987, when he headed up the OS/2 development team. Three years later he took over Microsoft's operations in the Far East, including establishing the first Asian research and development (R&D) laboratory. He also negotiated Microsoft's deal with NBC, creating MSNBC.

In 1998, Neupert took Drugstore.com from concept to launch in seven months. He served as president and chief executive officer of Drugstore.com Inc. from 1998 to 2001, and as chairman of the board of directors from 1999 to 2004. Neupert also served on President Bush’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 2003 to 2005. On that committee, he co-chaired the Health Information Technology subcommittee and helped drive the report Revolutionizing Health Care Through Information Technology, which was published in June 2004 by PITAC. Neupert re-joined Microsoft in 2005.

Sean Nolan is chief architect and general manager for the Health Solutions Group at Microsoft Corp., where he directs all aspects of product development and operations for the consumer health platform.

Nolan first began his career at Microsoft in 1991, as the development manager for the original Microsoft Network (MSN) client tools and the conversion to Internet technologies. Nolan joined Drugstore.com in 1998, and in 2000, he was named vice president of technology and chief technical officer for Drugstore.com. Nolan led the design and implementation of Drugstore.com’s award-winning e-commerce systems. While there, he was honored as one of the nation’s Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2001 by Computerworld magazine. Before rejoining Microsoft in 2006, Nolan co-founded a number of technology ventures, including Software Poetry Inc., a software and management consultancy, and Cognisoft Corp., where he was the architect of one of the first Web-based knowledge management systems.

The unseen Microsoft

I first learned about the Microsoft embedded department at The Imagine Cup. It's a category that seemed half software design and half hardware design- in fact it confused many outsiders. However, once we caught on, it was easily one of the most interesting aspects of the competition. So...continuing my love of all things "embedded"-I visited their home base here in Redmond to see what new and exciting toys they had coming down the pike. Good stuff.

Microsoft Research: “Innovations in Data Input and Navigation”

18 months ago, House Calls for Healthcare Professionals showed viewers something from Microsoft Research called “Play Anywhere”; a technology that allowed users to manipulate images projected on a table with nothing more than their hands. That technology has since been commercialized and is now called Surface Computing. It’s showing up in retail centers and casinos, and perhaps one day in your home or doctor’s office.

In this edition of House Calls, Dr. Bill Crounse revisits the creative geniuses at Microsoft Research to take a look at InkSeine and Lucidtouch, data input and screen navigation tools that might one day help clinicians and other people around the world work more efficiently.

salutations channel 10. im psyched to be posting this blog up here – the opportunity to join an interesting/varied/quirky community is awesome and I’m happy to be a part of.

a bit about me – im a recent college grad from Dartmouth College. the big green, the college on the hill, my little home in the middle of nowhere. i loved it out there - loved school, friends, even the dreadful weather. if you know any Dartmouth grads you’ll probably agree with me when I say that our loyalty runs deep, and the college is always in your heart and soul. ahhh trite perhaps but true:)

i grew up in seattle so im happy to be home. My family lives here and it holds all my childhood memories, but it is interesting to rediscover the city as a ‘grown-up’. the bar scene is not nearly as pitiful as people complain it is, and pacific northwest restaurants are awesome. i’m a big foodie and love to eat – and am finally working on the cooking part, albeit in my tiny new apartment with limited resources.. but its something.

rando facts – love the NYT, dig technology that is intuitive, am a travelling adict and spend millions of hours on social networking sites that allow me to stay in touch with people. i have a dog, am very interested in microfinance, and hope to drive a motorcycle some day soon.

i work at Microsoft as an enthusiast marketing manager – basically my job is to be here in Redmond and support our awesome Evangelists all over the world. It’s a kickass job with a lot of room for growth and dreams and learnings. so far so good..

so there’s a lot of ‘firsts’ going on in my life right now. First job, first apartment, first paycheck.. and first blog. i plan to write about my life as it is - a graduate, an employee, a 20 something, a woman, a technology enthusiast.. so as I try and get this rolling I’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, suggestions, lash outs, high fives, virtual nods.. yeeaaaa just talk to me.
