Gespräch mit Stephan Fasshauer - Office Tipps & Highlights

Neulich habe ich mit Stephan Fasshauer (Marketing Manager bei Microsoft Deutschland) über Office, Office Live und Office Online gesprochen. Er hat mir die Unterschiede zwischen die verschiedenen Produkte erklärt und mir ein paar Tipps zu den Office Produkte gegeben. Stephan hat mir auch sein Lieblingsfeature (SmartArt) und ein Schnellstartleiste Add-in für Office 2007 gezeigt. Dieses Add-in erweitert die Multifunktionsleiste (Ribbon) mit einem neuen Menüpunkt, das ermöglicht man schnell auf wichtige Hilfe und Anleitungen, Tipps & Tricks Ressourcen zuzugreifen und macht den Einstieg in Office 2007 einfacher. Auch interessant für Leute, die auf Office 2007 umgestiegen sind, ist ein Tool, um Funktionen in Office 2003 und 2007 zu vergleichen. Es ist ein interaktives Referenzhandbuch, um Funktionen in der neuen Menüführung zu finden.

Office Live Add-In Updated

If you've been using the Office Live Workspace (Beta) which allows you to save and share your Office documents from an online collaborative workspace on the web, then you probably also installed the Office Live Add-in which gave you access to open and save files to or from the workspace right from within your Office program. Now, that add-in has been updated and re-branded as Office Live Update. With this new version, there are also several improvements including 1) performance updates which make using it faster, 2) direct access to your workspaces from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and 3) a Multiple Document Upload Tool, which lets you drag and drop files directly from your desktop.

Office Live Workspace Is Here!

Have you heard the news? The previously closed beta of Office Live Workspace is now open to the public! With Office Live Workspace, you can now save and share your Microsoft Office files (and more) online via this site, a free web-based extension of Microsoft Office. After you sign up for Office Live and sign into the service, you'll be in the "Documents" area where you can upload and view files and share them with others. However, what really makes the service stand out is its namesake feature: the "workspaces." The "My Workspaces" section is to the left of the main window. You can create a new workspace by clicking on the plus button next to "New Workspace." Here, you can start with a blank workspace or choose one of the workspace templates provided. These templates include things like "Class Workspace," "Event Workspace," "Household Workspace," "Job Search Workspace," and more. Loading one of these templates populates the Workspace with some sample documents. For example, the "Job Search Workspace" comes pre-loaded with documents like a resume, a cover letter, an interview schedule, interview preparation notes, etc. When you're working with files, you can click on "edit" to open up the files in Microsoft Office. To add files from your computer, it's as easy as clicking "Add Document." You can even add multiple files at the same time, which is great for getting all your documents online at once. Individual documents or entire workspaces can be shared with others and everyone can add comments and be alerted via email to changes in the workspace. Using the provided Office plug-in allows for one-click access from the Microsoft Office desktop software to save or open files to and from the workspace. Office Live Workspace also integrates with SharedView for real-time screen sharing between collaborators.

Office Live Workspace is a free service - currently in private beta - for document access, storage and sharing "in the cloud". The service will be open to anyone with a Windows Live ID and (currently) gives you 500MB of space for Office documents, images, PDF files, custom lists and more.

I was interested to see how Office Live Workspace differed to Windows Live SkyDrive so we sat down with Eric from the Office Live team at CES 2008 for a demo.

Sign Up for Microsoft Office Live Workspace

Microsoft Office Live Workspace , the recently announced online companion to Microsoft Office, now has a website where you can pre-register to use this new, free service. Once the beta launches, Microsoft Office Live Workspace users will be able to store 1000+ documents online and access them from any computer with a web browser and internet connection. You'll be able to invite other people to your workspace, where you will have control over who can view, edit, and comment on your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. You'll also be able to synchronize contact lists, task lists, and event lists with Outlook. However, you can upload other documents, too, like PDFs and pictures; you are not just limited to Microsoft Office file formats.

Your files will be protected against viruses by Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint, and they can only be accessed with a Windows Live ID and password. Despite numerous comparisons to online office suites, that is not what this is. Rather, Office Live Workspace is a place to store, share, and collaborate with others on your documents online, whether those documents are slideshows or spreadsheets, PDFs or photos. Although the current online office suites may work for light users, there are those who need the robust functionality of a full-fledged office suite, and they shouldn't have to miss out on the online component that's increasingly necessary in today's world. That's where Office Live Workspace comes in.

For people who have worked in larger companies, the description of the new service may sound familiar; it's been dubbed "Sharepoint Lite" by some, and it's true, the service will soon bring "regular users" some of the powerful online collaboration and sharing features large businesses have used for years in Sharepoint. While many will clamor to be the top online office suite, Office Live Workspace offers a different way to work: a combination of software you own (Microsoft Office) plus a service (Office Live Workspace).
