Play The Olympics With Popfly

The Popfly team has put together a handful of Olympic-themed games in honor of the Summer Games occurring now in Beijing. There are ten games in all included archery, boxing, diving, gymnastics, long jump, soccer, synchronized swimming, track & field, weightlifting, and even torch lighting! Well, that last one isn’t really a sport, but you get the idea. The games, like most of the gaming content built with Popfly, are for the casual gamer who’s looking to kill some time or just relax and take a break by playing a lightweight, easy, and fun game. Next to each of the games listed, there is a link to customize the game, so if you want to tweak it to make it your own, you have that option, too. You can play all the games from popfly.com/sports.

Popfly on silverlight pohjainen palvelu, joka on ollut jonkin aikaa jo kokeiltavissa. Se on laajentunut myös helpoksi pelien tekoalustaksi selainpeleille. Verkkosivuja ja omia blogeja voi Popfly:lla ehostaa näppärästi, lisäämällä esitystapaan hiukan "potkua" lisäämällä vaikka pelin, jossa voi ampua palasiksi oman blogin kuvia. Ehkei sovellu niinkään hardcore liiketoimintaan, mutta sopii erityisesti omien sivustojen maustamiseen :-)

A Big List of Popfly Games

The folks on the Popfly team are keeping a list of their favorite games made by regular Popfly users over on the Popfly wiki. The games are categorized as Shooter, Adventure, Arcade, Puzzle, and Other. It's pretty impressive how many people have made games in such a short amount of time - something that speaks to the ease of using the Popfly game creator, I suppose.
Some of these games are pretty funny, too, featuring characters like an axe-throwing baby, a farting monster, a hungry pea, evil apples, and more. But I'm still a fan of the "Arrington in Space" one myself.

Vom 5. – 8. Mai fand in Stuttgart die 13. fmx Konferenz statt – Europas größte Konferenz zum Thema Animationen, Effekte, Games und Digital Media – veranstaltet von der Filmakademie Baden Württemberg. Microsoft war zum ersten Mal als einer der Hauptsponsoren mit einem großen Stand und einer Xbox-Lounge vertreten, an der sich die Besucher mit einer Tüte Popcorn bei Guitar Hero und anderen Xbox-Spielen vom Konferenzstress erholen konnten. Am Stand präsentierte Microsoft dem interessierten Publikum aus der Games-, Medien- und Designbranche neue Technologien wie Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft Popfly und Microsoft Live Labs Photosynth.

Ich war dabei und habe vor Ort mit Steffen Ritter, Microsoft Designer Marketing Manager über alles rund um die fmx und natürlich auch über sein Lieblings-Thema Silverlight gesprochen. Auch zu sehen in diesem Video, ein paar coole Silverlight Demos, vorgestellt von Oliver Scheer, Microsoft Developer Evangelist.

For more on Popfly Game Creator don't miss This Week on Channel 9. Jacqueline Russel, Lead Project Manager for Popfly, talks about Popfly Game Creator and Adam Nathan from the Popfly team goes over building a 2D side scroller.

I played around with it this morning and it's really simple - so if you're not a dev, don't worry about it - give it a try. There is a function to upload pictures to Popfly, but I was referencing photos I uploaded to Skydrive with no problem. Remember, if you use PNGs for your images you can have transparent backgrounds.

Working with "real" tetris pieces just sucks. I'm serious. First off, I ordered four pieces but apparantely the square and T piece were on strike because of the high gas prices. I know, makes no sense to me either. Anyway, you would think that after working together for so many years everybody could just get along. Not so much.

Oh Mario...what a sensitive little guy. We hired Mario because of his experience. He's been a Doctor, he's been Super...but what we didn't know is that he's tired of it all. His agent mentioned that over the past couple of years Mario has been a bit tougher to work with. He's a great guys, nice guy, just a sensitive guy.

Working with thugs isn't all it's cracked up to be. And don't get me started on female pimps, they're the worst. We hired a thug and pimp to help create our gangsta game and well, they were just totally into other things. We needed them to sell crack, and throw bricks through windows maybe even backhand a few hookers...but we got nothing.

Alguém lembra do Popfly? Ele é um conjunto de ferramentas no estilo WYSIWYG para criação de mashups e Web sites. Como mandatório no mundo Web 2.0, ele também tem uma comunidade própria onde seus usuários votam pelos melhores Web sites e mash-ups, compartilham suas criações e comentam livremente. O bacana do Popfly é que ele é super fácil de usar e seus mashups podem ser exportados para Sidebar do Windows Vista, para o Facebook, para o Digg, para o Reddit, ou até mesmo como iframe para incorporar em sites. Meu amigo René de Paula adora o Popfly e usa-o bastante. Veja um exemplo legal aqui no blog dele de como é possível agregar vários fontes de informações ou serviços dentro de um gadget que você incorpora no set site.

Bom, a novidade saindo do Maker Faire hoje é que o time do Popfly liberou uma nova função que é sensacional - Popfly Game Creator. Além de criar mashups e Web sites, agora você também pode criar jogos simples e divertidos dentro do Popfly. Você não precisa saber nada de programação nem de design (pra vocês eu recomendo o XNA) para criar um jogo. Em 3 passos você consegue criar seu primeira obra prima de vídeo game.

Selecione os personagens que você quer no seu jogo. Há 400 personagens diferentes disponíveis em categorias como pessoas, veículos, super poderes, e outras. Se não achar algo que agrade, você pode criar e importar para o Popfly.

Escolha o cenário. Há vários cenários para escolher e também efeitos sonoros para criar um clima bacana no jogo. Depois você posiciona os seus personagens nesse cenário.

Dê vida ao seu jogo. Agora você especifica alguns comportamentos que os personagens e o cenário terão. Com a interface WYSIWYG do Popfly, é fácil de determinar interações, eventos, e movimentos sem ter que programar uma sequer linha de código. E para quem quiser maior controle, é possível customizar essas ações com o editor embutido de JavaScript.

Popfly in Moonlight

Moonlight is a project designed to allow Linux computers the ability to run Silverlight applications. Just recently, blogger Daniele Muscetta installed Moonlight following these instructions, which apparently allowed her to get Popfly up-and-running on her Ubuntu installation, something that Popfly guy John Montgomery noticed here.

Popfly Update!

You may not have noticed but Popfly just got updated. It wasn't one of those "check out all the new bells and whistles" kind of updates, though - it was one of those "behind-the-scenes" kind of updates instead. So what did they do? Besides fixing a few bugs, Popfly got an improved caching system. What this means is that they've made some changes to Popfly to take better advantage of the browser cache which leads to anywhere from 2 to 6 times better performance when you load up an existing mashup! Nice work, guys.

New Popfly Features

A little over a week ago, the Popfly team announced a new version of Popfly which brought several changes to the tool. Most notably, was the edition of a data source editor which lets you bring your own data into the mashup designer. Your data, which needs to be in .CSV format, is shown in yellow blocks in the program. The update also offers an improved search interface, the ability to upload images and other files to your block, comments on profile pages, better ways to invite friends, and a Interface Technical Training, has done a video where he demonstrates how to create a Silverlight app that displays Twitter messages from various Twitter users. The video shows you how to make calls to the open source Twitter API via AJAX Page Methods, and display the results with faded text effects. You can watch the video and download the code.

Meanwhile, Steve Clayton writes a Popfly/Twitter mashup in about a minute and posts it on his blog. In the comments, Rohan Thomas writes that he found a way to post the widget on his MSDN blog. You can see it here in the left-hand column.

Ich habe mit Johannes Kebeck, Virtual Earth Technologie Spezialist, gesprochen und er hat mir viel über Virtual Earth erklärt und gezeigt. Virtual Earth ist Microsofts Plattform für Mapping-Applikationen und Local-Search. Mit Virtual Earth kann man digitale interaktive Karten mit verschiedenen Ansichten im Internet oder Intranet Applikationen einbauen, Geschäftsprozesse mit Geodaten umsetzen oder verwalten oder ganz einfach Daten auf einer Karte visuell abbilden.

Am coolsten mit der interaktiven Karte ist die Bird’s Eye View, wo man die Erde aus der Perspektive eines Vogels sehen kann. Deutschland aus der Bird’s Eye View Perspektive, könnt Ihr auch sehen unter…

Da kann man auch die Welt in 3D erleben.

Johannes hat mir auch den einfachsten Weg gezeigt, Virtual Earth zu benutzen. Mit Popfly kann man Mashups mit Virtual Earth bauen und einfach in Blogs, Live Spaces, Webseiten, etc. integrieren.

Innovation: Lets you use Microsoft's Silverlight platform to create Web mashups.

Benefit: Though Popfly is still in early beta, its operation is clearer and its display is more attractive than that of the similar Yahoo Pipes tool.

If you ever played with Legos as a kid, then you should be able to assemble a Web mashup in Microsoft's Popfly. No coding know-how needed--using Popfly is as simple as choosing content sources (such as pictures, video, or news feeds from various online sources) and connecting them to a display model (such as a video player, a dynamic box for text, or a game of whack-a-mole that pops up pictures, for instance). Voilà, you have your mashup. You can embed the resulting creation in a blog entry or Web page, or just share its URL so others can admire your work.

Letzte Woche hat Steve Ballmer auf dem Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco die Beta-Version von Popfly vorgestellt. Popfly ist ein Online-Tool um Webanwendungen, Webseiten, Mashups und Gadgets zu bauen. Es hat eine auf Silverlight basierende Oberfläche und bietet einen einfachen Weg eigene Kreationen zu erstellen sowie mit anderen auszutauschen. Dazu sind keinerlei Programmierkenntnisse nötig. Mit Popfly kann man seine eigene Webseite, sein Live Spaces oder Facebook-Profile und seinen Blog auf einfache Art und Weise sehr spannend erweitern.

Popfly Public Release

Just announced today; no more begging on the digital street for an invite to Popfly, it's now open to the public. As someone who is programmatically challenged, I love the idea of Popfly -- a way for non-programmers to create semi-complicated gadgets and mashups via drag and drop -- but I didn't know much about it. So I took a camera over to John Montgomery's office on the PopFly team to find out more.

So what can you do with Popfly? Here are some examples: Sunset Photos from Flickr on Virtual Earth, Your Flickr Photos, Halo videos on Soapbox, World of Warcraft Player Data, Facebook Rolodex, Stock Quote Bar Graph, Latest headlines from MSDN, Silverlight Twitter Updater, Twitter Vision, Halo 3 Scores.

Popfly Beta está aberto ao público

O Popfly é uma comunidade em beta criada pela Microsoft para estimular a criação de mashups. Através de uma interface gráfica, é possível combinar diversos tipos de aplicativos e serviços Web em um único produto ou serviço final. É bem fácil de usar e há um tutorial passo-a-passo (em inglês) ensinando como criar os mashups. A comunidade conta também com um criador de páginas Web no estilo WYSIWYG (editor gráfico e não em código) que pode incorporar os mashups.

Dentro do espírito de Web social, esses mashups podem ser comentados, votados, compartilhados e re-editados pela comunidade. Além disso, eles podem ser incorporados no Windows Live Spaces, no Facebook, em páginas HTML, enviados por email ou até exportados como Gadgets para a Barra Lateral do Windows Vista. Como o Popfly roda em Silverlight, é possível acessá-lo via Internet Explorer ou Firefox em Windows, Safari e Firefox no Mac OSX e até em distribuições Linux.
