Want 25 GB Of Free Online Storage?

Amid all the news last week about the upcoming new Windows Live and new Windows Live Photos service, one thing that may have been overlooked is how Windows Live SkyDrive was tied into those announcements. According to a post on the SkyDrive team blog, the team is increasing the amount of online storage from 5 GB to 25 GB! The reason for the increase is to provide more room for all the photos that will soon be uploaded using the new online photo service.

In addition to the storage increase, the SkyDrive service will also offer more features like the ability to download photos directly from SkyDrive to your Windows Live Photo Gallery desktop software. You can also choose to download entire folders as zip files, move files between folders, and copy files to multiple folders.

Another big revamp involves the sharing features and functionality. With the new SkyDrive, you’ll be able to share files and photos with others without requiring them to use a Windows Live ID. If you have certain groups of people that you share photos with on regular basis, you’ll be able to organize them into groups to make repeat sharing easier and faster. And you can see what your family and friends have shared with you all in one place. Commenting on photos will be improved with HTML, spam control and other options.

For Internet Explorer users, there will be an option to keep your IE favorites in sync in between all your computers, too.

The new SkyDrive will have a new look-and-feel when it relaunches so it fits in better with the rest of the new Windows Live. It’s not here yet, but, according to the team blog post, it will be here soon. Stay tuned!

Latest Updates to SkyDrive are Live

The Windows Live SkyDrive team blog gives us the latest on new updates to SkyDrive that launched today. SkyDrive is now available in 24 additional locations, with support for a total of 62 countries. You can now leave comments on any SkyDrive file. You can add captions to photos, there is a click control to quickly move through files in the folder, and the photo previews are larger.

Skydrive Now 5 GIGS!

That is not a typo. Today, the SkyDrive team announced that they are increasing the amount of free storage to five times what it was before, going from 1 GB to 5 GB. With this new release of the service, some other improvements to the site have been made to make the service faster and more reliable too. This new version of SkyDrive, now no longer in beta, is also available in 38 more countries and regions. To see if your region is listed, check out the SkyDrive blog. How Do You Run Windows Live?

Mike Torres, a member of the Windows Live team, recently posted an article detailing how he uses the Windows Live suite of programs. It's an interesting read, because Mike really uses Windows Live to its fullest as well as running almost 100% Microsoft software at home. He says he wants to "eat the Microsoft dog food," and that he does - in addition to Windows Live, he also runs Media Center on Vista Ultimate, Zune, Office 2007, Visual Studio, Office Communicator, Expression Studio, and Money 2007.

Mike then goes on to detail how he uses all aspects of the Windows Live suite - Hotmail, Live Mail, Windows Live for Windows Mobile, Messenger, FolderShare, OneCare, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, SkyDrive, Spaces, and Windows Live Events.

Since most of us use web services piecemeal, choosing our favorite app for the particular job at hand, it's cool to hear from someone who uses every piece of the online suite. As he says, "Windows without Live on it feels plain these days - sort of like how Xbox must feel without Xbox LIVE."

I have to admit, there are certain things in Windows Live suite that I almost think of as just a part of Windows now, like Windows Live Photo Gallery and Live Mail. When I went to set up a new Vista installation recently, I had to remind myself to go out and download them again. I personally love Windows Live Photo Gallery's "Send to flickr" feature - what a timesaver that is! I'm also a huge fan of SkyDrive, an online storage option where you have a gig of free storage for your files (of any type - not just Office docs!). And of course, I don't even know what I would do without Live Writer.

Get the Windows Live MSIs

If you want to deploy software to a bunch of computers at once on a network, you need an MSI file. Since the Windows Live apps are more consumer-oriented, the installers are not provided in that form from the app's homepage. However, there is a way to acquire the MSI files you need - actually, there are two ways:

1. Install the programs on one computer. The MSI files can then be found locally:

* 32-bit Windows - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources
* 64-bit Windows - C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

2. Download the installers directly from the Live Suite SkyDrive folder. In this folder, you can find the following:

     * Windows Live Sign-In Assistant 4.200.520.1: Install_{AFA4E5FD-ED70-4D92-99D0-162FD56DC986}.msi
    * Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018: Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi
    * Windows Live Writer 12.0.1366.1026: Install_{9176251A-4CC1-4DDB-B343-B487195EB397}.msi
    * Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606.1023: Install_{184E7118-0295-43C4-B72C-1D54AA75AAF7}.msi
    * Windows Live Toolbar 03.01.0000.0146: Install_{D5A145FC-D00C-4F1A-9119-EB4D9D659750}.msi
    * Windows Live Photo Gallery 12.0.1308.1023: Install_{257E440F-781F-459B-9A68-A0872B80C1D6}.msi

Before you install Windows Live Photo Gallery you will need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition.

An introduction to Office Live Workspace

A message from the Office Live Workspace team: Stop emailing yourself files! :)

Office Live Workspace is a free service - currently in private beta - for document access, storage and sharing "in the cloud". The service will be open to anyone with a Windows Live ID and (currently) gives you 500MB of space for Office documents, images, PDF files, custom lists and more.

I was interested to see how Office Live Workspace differed to Windows Live SkyDrive so we sat down with Eric from the Office Live team at CES 2008 for a demo.

Getting the Most Out of SkyDrive

If you've been using Windows Live SkyDrive, then you already know how handy it is to have your most important files available to you online, accessible from anywhere that has an internet connection. But are you getting the most out of SkyDrive? Check out the following tips below to find out!

1. Embedding SkyDrive files online: SkyDrive is more than just free online storage - you can also share your files on the internet in a number of ways. You can either use the URL to link to your shared file, or you can embed a badge linking to your file. You can choose from one of three badges styles for the embed. Check out this blog for an example of all three.

2. Get the SkyDrive Live Writer plugin: Bloggers using Live Writer will love this one - there is a SkyDrive plugin available for Live Writer that lets you put the embed code for a SkyDrive file or folder into a blog entry created with Live Writer. You can also browse your SkyDrive files from within the plugin to choose what file you want to embed.

3. Use the drag-and-drop upload feature: drag-and-dropping your files makes uploading so much easier. To use this feature, go to the folder you want to add files to and click on "Add files." At the bottom of the page, click on "Install this upload tool." Install the ActiveX control (the yellow information bar should pop-up - click it, click "Install ActiveX Control, then click "Install.") Upload away!

4. Subscribe to a friend's SkyDrive RSS feed: To subscribe to a SkyDrive RSS feed, go to the public folder that you’re interested in, and click on the orange RSS Feed at the top right of the page. Then, anytime that folder is updated, you’ll be notified.

5. Get alerted in Messenger when a friend shares a SkyDrive file: After adding your friend to your Windows Live Messenger contact list, you will see a yellow "gleam" next to their name when they share a new file on SkyDrive. Their contact card will show the last few files they've uploaded.

6. Play Music & Video on your Space Using SkyDrive: this site has an excellent post on how you can use SkyDrive to play music & video in Windows Live Spaces.

New SkyDrive Features

The Windows Live SkyDrive team just announced some new features, here is what is included:

· 1 GB of storage – Everyone now gets 1 GB of space.

· RSS feeds – You can subscribe to RSS feeds on public folders. You will receive a notification anytime someone changes the folder.

· Add a contact from the SkyDrive website – You no longer have to go to Hotmail or Messenger to add contacts to share with. You can now add contacts on the SkyDrive website.

· See who uploaded a file – On the page that tells you all the details about a file, you can now see who uploaded the file.

· Share with non Live IDs—In the past, only Live ID contacts would appear in your contact picker. Now, you can share with any e-mail address. The owner of the non Live ID e-mail address will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to access the shared folder.
