The Windows Live Photo and Video blog recently posted a great tutorial on how to geotag your photos without GPS. How is this possible? The trick to geotagging your pics is using a combination of Windows Live services - Windows Live Photo Gallery, Spaces, and Windows Live Maps. The blog post details all the steps, with screenshots, so it's easy for anyone to do. The end result is a Windows Live Maps collection collection of geotagged pictures! Awesome! Excellent post, guys - definitely worth a read for photographers and geotagging enthusiasts!

Jason points out that some mobile operators ship Windows Mobile with the full version of Windows Live, which includes Windows Live Messenger, others ship with a partner-developed Windows Live Messenger client instead.

If you're in that last half, you might be missing out on all the features of a full Windows Live install, which includes push Hotmail, Windows Live Contacts synchronization, a Live Search bar for your homescreen, and one-click photo upload to Windows Live Spaces. But now, there's a special version of Windows Mobile just for you, available now from http://wl.windowsmobile.com.

Microsoft site Messenger Cafe is a site dedicated to games and activities for Windows Live Messenger. And right now, you can visit this page to get some free theme packs to add to your Live Messenger. The packs available now include a Winter Theme pack, some Halloween themes, a "funky chicken" pack, a back-to-school pack with unique emoticons, and a Christmas-themed Howard the Elf pack. According to this blog post, there was a Halo 3 theme pack, but that one seems to be MIA. Hey guys, can we have it back now?

FolderShare is a utility that you can use to keep your files in sync across your computers. You can also use FolderShare to share your files with friends or accessing them when you're away from home from any computer that has an internet connection.

The FolderShare team has just announced a major update to the beta, which addresses some issues like problems with IOMEGA drives and issues some users had when using the utility on XP and Vista. They also updated their FAQ, available here, with more questions and answers, which is a great place to give the team feedback on the service.

The FolderShare beta is available both for Windows and Mac.

It was announced that the Windows Live division has partnered with five social networks - LinkedIn, Facebook, Bebo, Hi5, and Tagged to facilitate address book portability, as a part of the commitment to supporting data portability initiatives. Using the Windows Live Contacts API, announced at this month's MIX08, the users of the social networks can easily import their Windows Live contacts into the social network web sites. Starting today, you can visit www.facebook.com and www.bebo.com to find your friends using the Windows Live Contacts API.  Hi5, Tagged and LinkedIn will be live in the coming months.

Additionally, a new site, Invite2Messenger, will let social network users invite their friends from their social networks to join their Windows Live Messenger contact list. As of today, Facebook works, with the other networks coming soon.

This 2-way street for moving relationships from site to site is more secure than other methods, like "screen scraping," which is the term used to describe the process of allowing one site access to your address book by providing your login credentials (or vice versa). This new process respects your privacy while still allowing for the open flow of data.

To raise awareness for Microsoft's Live@edu, Microsoft is holding a contest among student software developers to see who can design the best application for Windows Live. You can check out some sample apps on the dev.live.com/mashups pages, which include some already created mashups like 3D Geology Maps, a meta search engine, a crisis "hotspot" map, and so much more. To get involved, go to http://www.campusmashups.com. The judging will be 25% public opinion (so get your friends to vote!), 25% usage of Windows Live Tools, and 50% creativity and utility of the application. One grand prize winner will receive $10,000.00 in cash! Two runners up receive $2500/each and two third place winners receive an Xbox 360 Halo 3 prize pack ($500 value). This makes me wish I was a student...and a developer!

I just noticed that the new Office Live Workspace has been integrated right onto your Windows Live Homepage (http://home.live.com) under the "More Services" section. That's handy! Now with one-click, you can access your workspaces on the new Office Live Workspace service right from homepage you're on every day!

Along with the announcement of the new features to Office Live, there also arrives a new add-in for Microsoft Office users. With this add-in, you can now open and save documents directly from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, directly into your Office Live Workspace. The add-in works by providing you with new menu options if you're using Office 2007 or it will provide a toolbar if you're using Office XP or 2003. You can download the add-in for free from here.

If you're into digital photography, I just discovered a great resource that you'll want to check out via Brian Johnson's BufferOverrun blog. Brian created a list of links using Microsoft Live Labs Listas, which breaks down the resources into the following categories: Digital Camera Resources, Photography Education and Techniques, Photo Software and Sharing, Photography Podcasts, and Photography User Groups and Events. The list features some Microsoft resources, like PhotoSynth and some non-Microsoft resources like Paint.NET's Wikibook. Even if you don't have time to peruse the whole list now, it's one of those gems that you find and just have to bookmark!

The Windows Live Spaces team have officially announced some new features to both the Windows Live Spaces and Live Events services. The new features are:

  • Friends of Friends: this feature will show you the friends you have in common with others when you visit their space
  • Multiple photo modules: you can now showcase your photos in separate albums on your Space just by adding more than one album from the Customize page
  • In Live Events: now your own name and email address appears on the invitation instead of the automatically generated one. Also, public events you organize will show up in your Windows Live profile and the Events homepage now so your friends & contacts will know when and where it's happening

I'm most excited about the "friends of friends" feature, something that is very Facebook-like (which I love). It's always cool to see who everyone knows!

That is not a typo. Today, the SkyDrive team announced that they are increasing the amount of free storage to five times what it was before, going from 1 GB to 5 GB. With this new release of the service, some other improvements to the site have been made to make the service faster and more reliable too. This new version of SkyDrive, now no longer in beta, is also available in 38 more countries and regions. To see if your region is listed, check out the SkyDrive blog. The SkyDrive service is available from skydrive.live.com.

Confira no vídeo.

From Josh Legard comes an alpha release of a new Windows Live Writer plugin that makes it easy to pull multiple RSS or Atom feed items into a blog post. The plugin can be used to insert RSS items or even del.icio.us links into your blog post.  The download includes an installer which also installs the source code in the WLW plugins directory on your computer, if you want to delve into it. To get started, download the plug-in from here: http://ledgards.com/files/folders/610/download.aspx. After installing it, you'll see a new option to "Insert Feed Content" on your insert menu to insert a feed. Enter the URL of the feed you want to insert in the pop-up and click "OK." The contents of the feed will be inserted into your blog post. (via BufferOverrun)

Mike Torres, a member of the Windows Live team, recently posted an article detailing how he uses the Windows Live suite of programs. It's an interesting read, because Mike really uses Windows Live to its fullest as well as running almost 100% Microsoft software at home. He says he wants to "eat the Microsoft dog food," and that he does - in addition to Windows Live, he also runs Media Center on Vista Ultimate, Zune, Office 2007, Visual Studio, Office Communicator, Expression Studio, and Money 2007.

Mike then goes on to detail how he uses all aspects of the Windows Live suite - Hotmail, Live Mail, Windows Live for Windows Mobile, Messenger, FolderShare, OneCare, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, SkyDrive, Spaces, and Windows Live Events.

Since most of us use web services piecemeal, choosing our favorite app for the particular job at hand, it's cool to hear from someone who uses every piece of the online suite. As he says, "Windows without Live on it feels plain these days - sort of like how Xbox must feel without Xbox LIVE."

I have to admit, there are certain things in Windows Live suite that I almost think of as just a part of Windows now, like Windows Live Photo Gallery and Live Mail. When I went to set up a new Vista installation recently, I had to remind myself to go out and download them again. I personally love Windows Live Photo Gallery's "Send to flickr" feature - what a timesaver that is! I'm also a huge fan of SkyDrive, an online storage option where you have a gig of free storage for your files (of any type - not just Office docs!). And of course, I don't even know what I would do without Live Writer.

You can check out the Windows Live Suite at http://get.live.com. Or, if you're already using it, let me know what your favorite features are, too!

If you want to deploy software to a bunch of computers at once on a network, you need an MSI file. Since the Windows Live apps are more consumer-oriented, the installers are not provided in that form from the app's homepage. However, there is a way to acquire the MSI files you need -  actually, there are two ways:

1. Install the programs on one computer. The MSI files can then be found locally:

    * 32-bit Windows - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources
    * 64-bit Windows - C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

2. Download the installers directly from the Live Suite SkyDrive folder. In this folder, you can find the following:

     * Windows Live Sign-In Assistant 4.200.520.1: Install_{AFA4E5FD-ED70-4D92-99D0-162FD56DC986}.msi
    * Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018: Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi
    * Windows Live Writer 12.0.1366.1026: Install_{9176251A-4CC1-4DDB-B343-B487195EB397}.msi
    * Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606.1023: Install_{184E7118-0295-43C4-B72C-1D54AA75AAF7}.msi
    * Windows Live Toolbar 03.01.0000.0146: Install_{D5A145FC-D00C-4F1A-9119-EB4D9D659750}.msi
    * Windows Live Photo Gallery 12.0.1308.1023: Install_{257E440F-781F-459B-9A68-A0872B80C1D6}.msi

Before you install Windows Live Photo Gallery you will need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition.

Did you know that many cameras can take better photos than the jpeg standard can display? This means that the camera is often trying to figure out which ball to drop in terms of how to save the photo and therefore limits you in the color correction you can make after taking the picture. Raw has been one way around this problem, another is Microsoft's new HD Photo format.

You may think that you need some expensive or proprietary software to use this new format - not so. You can get started using HD Photo using Windows Live Photo Gallery, a free download. Check out this screencast of Jon Udell talking to Bill Crow about how simple it is for "happy snappers" to easily adjust photo attributes using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

If you've been using Windows Live SkyDrive, then you already know how handy it is to have your most important files available to you online, accessible from anywhere that has an internet connection. But are you getting the most out of SkyDrive? Check out the following tips below to find out!

1. Embedding SkyDrive files online: SkyDrive is more than just free online storage - you can also share your files on the internet in a number of ways. You can either use the URL to link to your shared file, or you can embed a badge linking to your file. You can choose from one of three badges styles for the embed. Check out this blog for an example of all three.

2. Get the SkyDrive Live Writer plugin: Bloggers using Live Writer will love this one - there is a SkyDrive plugin available for Live Writer that lets you put the embed code for a SkyDrive file or folder into a blog entry created with Live Writer. You can also browse your SkyDrive files from within the plugin to choose what file you want to embed.

3. Use the drag-and-drop upload feature: drag-and-dropping your files makes uploading so much easier. To use this feature, go to the folder you want to add files to and click on "Add files." At the bottom of the page, click on "Install this upload tool." Install the ActiveX control (the yellow information bar should pop-up - click it, click "Install ActiveX Control, then click "Install.") Upload away!

4. Subscribe to a friend's SkyDrive RSS feed: To subscribe to a SkyDrive RSS feed, go to the public folder that you’re interested in, and click on the orange RSS Feed at the top right of the page. Then, anytime that folder is updated, you’ll be notified.

5. Get alerted in Messenger when a friend shares a SkyDrive file: After adding your friend to your Windows Live Messenger contact list, you will see a yellow "gleam" next to their name when they share a new file on SkyDrive. Their contact card will show the last few files they've uploaded.

6. Play Music & Video on your Space Using SkyDrive: this site has an excellent post on how you can use SkyDrive to play music & video in Windows Live Spaces.

The Windows Live team recently released a new service called Windows Live Community Builder. With this service, you can offer your community members, whether for business, non-profit, or anyone, customized versions of Windows Live services like Windows Live Search, Windows Live Photos, Windows Live Contacts, Virtual Earth mapping, & Silverlight technologies. The service also includes the features of Windows Live Admin Center, which brings Windows Live Hotmail, Live Calendar, Messenger, Spaces, & SkyDrive services to your users branded with your own domain name. For a killer example of the Community Builder in action, check out The Group Inc. Real Estate's website. Built with Live Services, the site features map-based property searches. A bunch of other mashups are listed here. And if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of the Live services that Community Builder uses, this PDF has a color-coded chart showing the platform's web controls, service APIs, and data.

Windows Live Calendar, a new service that replaces MSN Calendar, launched earlier this week in a public beta. The beta offers features like multiple color-coded calendars, shared calendars, email and text message alerts for appointments, and the ability to subscribe to a calendar's contents via RSS. Built with AJAX, the online calendar offers some desktop-app-like navigation features, including drag-and-drop, single-click to add an appointment, and scrolling through dates using a mouse wheel. Sharing your Windows Live Calendar is easy but has sophisticated rights management processes working on the back-end which let you share out as much or as little of your calendar as you want. You can let people see only free/busy info, you can give them read-only permissions to your appointments, or you can even give them read/write permissions to your calendar. Individual appointments can be set as private, too (click New to display the New Appointment box, then click "Add more details", and check the "Private" checkbox). If your friends don't have Windows Live IDs, you can send them a private link to view your calendar without needing them to sign in with a Live ID. Live Calendar supports the iCal standard, which means you can manually merge Windows Live Calendar with other iCal-based calendars. For example, you can import an Outlook 2007 calendar in this format.

However, one of the coolest things is the ability to automatically sync your Windows Live Calendar to Windows Calendar on Vista. If you're not using Outlook's calendar on your home PC running Vista, the built-in Windows Calendar may be what you're using for your personal appointments and family schedules. Since Windows Live Calendar allows you to share out your calendar in .ics format, you can then subscribe to your Windows Live calendar in Vista's Windows Calendar. This means that changes to your Live Calendar automatically get synced back to your PC in Windows Calendar. See a step-by-step video of how to do this here. (Thanks to the Vista blog for this last tip!)

Last week, Windows Live Services software was released and upgraded. If you had betas installed, or just earlier versions of the products, you can upgrade them to the latest and greatest in a few simple clicks. Check out the Windows Live Services page here for the link:

Ever since its first beta release in August 2006, I've been a big fan of Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a fully featured Windows blogging client with support for spell checking, WYSIWYG editing, picture uploading and custom plug-ins (with a full SDK). In addition to the expected Windows Live Spaces support, it also supports a ton of other blogging engines including a generic metaweblog api setting that I can use to blog on both on10.net and duncanmackenzie.net!

With the 1.0 release it seemed like a good time to learn a bit more about this app, so I sat down with Becky Pezely from the Windows Live Writer team and got all the details. Check out the video for yourself, learn all about this cool product, then scoot over to download the 1.0 version. Don't stop there though, check out all the great plug-ins available for Windows Live Writer and if you are a Flickr user, make sure to grab Tim Heuer's Flick4Writer plug in (that I mention in the video) and insert your flickr photos into Writer with the greatest of ease!

The Windows Live Messenger Team posted on their blog about an easy new way to create an IM button to put on your website, blog, or in your email signature. To get started, click here and begin to customize your button. You can pick different shapes, colors, taglines, and then you enter in your Live ID and snag the code for your button. The button code works on Spaces, Blogger, Facebook, MySpace, Outlook 2003/2007, MSN Hotmail/Windows Live Hotmail/Windows Live Mail beta or it can be added to your website. When your friends and family click on the button, you are automatically added to their contact list. Cool.

Ever since we came out with live.com I have been a huge fan of the domain name.  You say "Google it" I say "Live it!"  To each his own.

Either way, for a long time I have been asking the product teams to use username@live.com instead of user@hotmail.com as my email address... and today they have delivered! Starting right now you can go here and register a name, like bubba@live.com, but you better hurry before all the good (short) names are taken and you end up with something like clownmember.f4r7@live.com.

The Live Search team announced on their latest blog post some great new features for Live Search: Autospell and Stemming. They hope that these features will help to return the best search results for your intent, and not just the particular terms you searched for. The Autospell feature determines whether or not you've misspelled your search term and delivers you a page of spell-corrected search results as opposed to a "Did you mean _______?" link at the top. They promise that this feature will only be activated if they are "absolutely, completely, totally, 'no doubt about it' confident you misspelled one of your search terms!" The second big improvement is stemming. What stemming does is match the "stem," or root of the word, rather than the exact word. As an example, they reported that users had told them that the search "half price book Redmond" returned terrible results, but "half price books Redmond" was much better. Wtih stemming, searches for "half price book" will now also return the results of "half price books." Stemming is tricky because you can "stem" all the time - a search for "cable" could mean TV or some type of cord! So the challenge with stemming is knowing when to turn it on and off. Try some searches for yourself and then let the team know what you think!

If you like to chat and also enjoy helping others there is a great option for you. And it will not cost you a cent. For every conversation you start by using Windows Live Messenger there is a certain amount of money donated to your preferred charity organization - e.g. I've chosen the UNICEF. In order to contribute to our society this way you just have to add a special logo "I´M" in front of your name. There has been almost $150,000 raised so far.
You might also consider to star in a new MTV project that is starting now in order to promote this cause.
Windows Live Messenger has over 220 million contacts worldwide. It is popular for the wide range of services it offers. Apart from the traditional text, phone and video conversations users can play games (e.g. chess), chat with special agents like Encarta and share their photos and other files. All this is for free - as well as other Windows Live services.

For those with kids, you know that keeping them safe online can present a major challenge. That's where Windows Live OneCare Family Safety, a new Windows Live service, can help. With the Family Safety service, your kids are protected by internet filtering, contact approval, activity reports, and built-in recommendations. The web safe management feature lets you filter the websites you don't want them to see. By working with Live Search, the service can block inappropriate search results. Aind with MSN Encarta, it can help deliver information that's age-appropriate. Activity reports are provided which show you which sites your kids visit. A contact approval feature lets you know who your kids are talking to on IM (Windows Live Messenger), email (Windows Live Mail), or on their blogs (Windows Live Spaces). You can approve or disapprove each contact they add. Your child can also ask for your permission to see a blocked site or add a contact right from the web. No matter where you are, you can review and block these requests as you see fit from any internet-connected PC. Based on the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and other sources, the Family Safety service offers some default settings based on the age of the child. You can then tweak these settings as needed. The service runs on Windows XP SP2+ or Windows Vista.

Do you have multiple Windows Live IDs? Maybe an older one and a new one, one for work & one for home? A public one and a private one? If so, you know that in the past it has been difficult to manage and switch between your different identities. No more! Windows Live now offers a Linked Windows Live ID service. This service lets you link your Windows Live accounts together and easily switch between them.

Once set up, you can switch between your identities with one click from a menu on the top-right of most Windows Live pages (click the down arrow by your name). To get started, head to https://account.live.com and sign in with one of your IDs. Look for the section called "Linked Windows Live IDs" and click on the link. On the next page, you'll be able to enter in one or more additional IDs you want to link to the ID you are signed in with. After setting this up, you'll have to sign out then back in to activate the feature. (Via The Space Craft)

A must-have for Windows Mobile users is the Live Search app for mobile devices. If you need to search for a place, get directions, or find what else is in the area, Live Search for Windows Mobile can really be a lifesaver. After installation, to use Live Search, you just click on the Live Search icon from the device's Start Menu, and the application launches. From the main screen, you can easily navigate to select the city of your choice by drilling down by geographic region and alphabetical listings. To find a business or category, you enter in the information you need to find in the search box and your results will display on a map. You can use the routing feature to get directions from point A to point B, and, in major cities, you can even see what traffic is like on your selected route. Roadblocks and delays get highlighted in red, letting you know if you need to plan an earlier departure to reach your destination in time.

Using a compatible Bluetooth GPS receiver, you can view your location on the map in real-time. If you're in a particular area and are looking for things to do, you can use the Live Search tool to find nearby restaurants, shopping & services, transportation, nightlife, and more. After choosing a particular selection from this menu, you can zoom in, get directions, save to your contacts, or SMS the location to a friend. To get the application, download Live Search from http://ls.windowsmobile.com using your device's browser.
