In addition to articles about web development and design, the website now also features a “Downloads” section, which is where you can find the Microsoft Web Platform download.

So what is the Microsoft Web Platform? Basically, it’s a bundled download of all the Microsoft developer technologies from the .NET Framework 3.5 to ASP.NET to Silverlight and more. It provides a single package for installing and configuring Microsoft's entire Web Platform, which includes IIS7, Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and, of course, the .NET Framework.

The bundle has two main parts to it: 1) the Microsoft Web Platform Installer (WebPI), and 2) the Microsoft Web Application Installer (WebAI). The “Web Platform Installer” is a download manager that simplifies the download and installation process for the Microsoft technologies. However, it’s the “Web Application Installer” which is especially interesting. This piece of the WPI is a gallery that manages the setup, configuration, and acquisition of a number of technologies that run on top of Windows. This includes applications like popular ASP.NET and PHP web apps and even includes some that are open source. Some of the apps you're able to install with this platform are DotNetNuke, Drupal, Gallery, Graffiti, osCommerce, PHPBB, and Wordpress.

The Web Platform Installer Tool will also help developers by providing hands-on guidance to developers who are building cloud applications with these tools. The download is free and runs on Vista and Server 2008.

<evnet:views>13967</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23774/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
The Microsoft Web Platform has just been launched and is available for download now from www.microsoft.com/web – the same site we recently featured here not too long ago. With this new option, you can subscribe to Soapbox videos by category, user video list, or via a search. That last option is especially helpful, as it will retrieve any videos relating to a particular search term and have them automatically sync to your PC. So, for example, if you wanted to see all the videos about Live Mesh, you could just search for the term live mesh and subscribe the results.

To see the subscribe option for the videos found via a search, click “view all results” and you’ll notice both an RSS icon for subscribing to the videos in your preferred RSS software as well as a “subscribe with Zune” button ( ) to have the videos added to your podcast subscriptions in your Zune software (which, by the way, is a free download – you don’t need to own a Zune to use it).

If you need access to the video files themselves, you’ll find them in the Zune/Podcasts folder. Michael Gannotti recently blogged about this to demonstrate how you could access his SharePoint videos from Soapbox, so we thank him for providing us with this excellent tip!

<evnet:views>6855</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23036/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Thanks to a new feature in Soapbox, the section of user-generated videos found here on MSN Video, you can now automatically download and sync videos to your PC and to your Zune. One of its best features is that it offers different ways to switch between screens - which is arguably the most important feature in a multiple desktop program. In Dexpot, you can use keyboard shortcuts (my fav) or you can click on the Desktop Manager interface, which hovers above the Windows Taskbar. With the program, each desktop can be customized with its own settings, files can be quickly moved from window to window, you can preview other desktops, and a lot more. Best of all, the program is available for free for personal use - you can download it from here. (via MakeUseOf)

<evnet:views>7050</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/22290/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Dexpot is desktop manager software that lets you easily manage multiple desktops. The tool is called Microsoft Pro Photo Tools V1 and this free application lets you geotag your photos as well as edit the photo's metadata - even in RAW format. The geotagging feature lets you organize your photos by location taken - info that can come from a GPS device or Live Search Maps. You can see some some screenshots of how this geotagging process works on the Windows Experience blog.

In addition to the Pro Photo Tools download, Microsoft also released Expression Media 2, a new version of its digital asset management software, which is designed to work with the Pro Tools software. Expression Media 2 helps save time when it comes to managing and organizing large collections of photos and other digital media, and it includes geotagging functionality built-in. Expression Media 2 also lets you quickly export of photos into multiple formats to produce slide shows, video, and interactive Microsoft Silverlight-powered web galleries.

“Geotagging is a hot new area in digital photography, and like other popular digital photo features, I expect photographers will be asking themselves how they ever lived without it,” said Ron Glaz, analyst at IDC. “Until now geotagging has been hard to do, requiring special expertise and tools. The time has come for an application that even the weekend photographer can use."

Well now with Pro Photo Tools V1, even the weekend photographer can do geotagging!

<evnet:views>7660</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/22222/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Just recently, a new tool for photographers was released which helps you better manage your digital photos.
