Coming Soon: Premium Channels on Media Center PCs

Recently, Microsoft announced a new platform that will permit the manufacturers of media center PCs the ability to support “premium” channels on their devices. These channels have been difficult to get access to in the past due the the TV industry’s requirements that they are covered by copy protection technology. The Microsoft platform called Protected Broadcast Driver Architecture (PBDA) extends the previous Architecture known as Broadcast Driver Architecture (BDA), which has been in use since Windows 98. PBDA, in development since 2005, was recently delivered as a part of the new Windows Media Center TV Pack, which made the software available to Media Center PCs. Now, all that’s needed is for manufacturers to build and ship PBDA-compatible cards. Two manufacturers overseas have already stepped up to the plate (Happague and AverMedia) and Microsoft believes that pay TV reception over-the-air will be possible by 2009. As expected, this years CES was filled with every type pf television imaginable. Big ones, little ones, plasmas, HD...you name it. With all of those options at your fingertips it's hard to imagine one screen actually sticking out. But I found one! In the way back of the South Hall I found Mirror Image by Ad Notam. They make custom glass or mirror contained High Definition televisions. Now we can all watch Oprah while staring at ourselves! My favorite is the disappearing screen- check it out.

Bill Gates brings Vista to The Daily Show

As if it weren't already plugged into our DVR schedule, but The Daily Show will host our man BillG Monday, 29 January. There will no doubt be a lot of talk about Vista, as well as some chat about the Gates foundation. We here round the 10 reservation are hoping that MS Bob gets an honorable mention. New Vista Media Center remote design?

We here at 10 love the rumors as much as anyone, and when we see talk of something handheld we get even more excited.

The maligned yet fabulous world of Windows Media Center has gotten a breath of fresh air in Vista, and with the consumer launch fast approaching new Vista Media Center (VMC) machines will hit the streets. What is potentially the new VMC remote sure looks pretty, and a comfortable place for millions of predominantly male hands to rest while relaxing at home.

Xbox Live Video brings HD movies and television to your Xbox 360

If you're like us, one of the most obnoxious things about living the geek lifestyle is switching between television inputs. Video-1 for the Tivo, Video-2 for the HD content, Video-3 for the Xbox, etc. For the all the happy proliferation of digital toys in our lives, we always end up craving consolidation (termed by the jargon demagogues as 'convergence').

Beginning on the 22nd of this month, which just happens to be its birthday, your Xbox 360 will offer feature film and television downloads. Through the cunning use of the Live Marketplace and your Microsoft Points, you'll be able to subscribe to television shows like CSI: Miami and Robot Chicken. Also if you want to rent an HD version of V for Vendetta it'll be there waiting on the other end of your broadband pipe. Check out the Live Marketplace movie and tv menus at Engadget.

Disney-ABC President Anne Sweeney understands piracy, "serves a need..."

We’ve all been witness to the disconnect between the people and their leadership, and nowhere is this divide more apparent than between Internet users and content providers. Digital music piracy, DRM-crippled television, and overpriced underwhelming motion pictures have left their marks on all of us. Through the years the media companies have dragged their heels, kicking and screaming towards new technology.

Yesterday during her keynote at MIPCOM, (the world’s audiovisual content market, dontchyaknow) co-chair of Disney Media Networks and President of the Disney-ABC Television Group Anne Sweeney proved that even media leaders can adapt:

“We understand now that piracy is a business model. It exists to serve a need in the market for consumers who want TV content on demand. Pirates compete the same way we do – through quality, price, and availability. We don’t like the model but we realize it’s competitive enough to make it a major competitor going forward.”

Wow. Does this sort of illuminating speak mean that we’re one step further away from incarcerating those of us who are fans of your content, just not of your distribution model? Sure this is but one step forward down a long road, but for now Ms. Sweeney, you are officially 10’s Magical Media Mistress!
